Thinking of getting a .22 lever action for a bit of fun on the target range.

Why are they not very popular ? anyone own one they can recommend or give advise on ?

Was thinking of a browning sll22 but not in stock anywhere

If only you'd asked a month ago--just sold my Browning BL .22. It took me ages to find, but I never got on with it.

I have a Winchester in .22mag.

Really nice gun, really nice action.

As accurate as I am and knocks rabbits down with ease. I only really do pest control and it is very effective on killing rabbits.

Never had any fail to fires or fail to eject (a common issue with lever action .22)

I have also owned a Marlin. With quite a bit of work you can get them to be 99% reliable. Accuracy was similar to a shotgun.

The Americans seem to rave about the 39A. I wouldn't have another.

Henry has a good reputation but from what I can gather are a bit cheap and cheerful. Said to be the slickest action of the lot.

My advice would be to try and find a Winchester. Sign up with Gunstar, set your search for Winchester lever action and they will email you if/when one is listed.

Fail to fire and eject! My 9422 pings empties out like mad!

As accurate as a shotgun!! Something was very wrong with that Marlin but please please don't assume they are all the same as your singular experience!

As I said, no ftf or fte with my 9422.

Go on any Marlin site and you will see many threads with these two issues in 39A though. Most likely as a sticky!

Have to concede that most claim super-duper accuracy with the 39. Shooting competition results suggest otherwise, not many folk winning with a 39.

The poor accuracy of the one I owned may well be a singular experience, for me it will remain as such because I won't be buying one again.

Plenty out there but perhaps a bit rarer in the UK.

For Marlin avoid anything after Remington took over as QC went downhill.

I have quite a few rifles - amongst them I have 4 underlevers. A Marlin 39M Golden 22LR (1973 model) - this is a takedown model with a 15 round tube magazine. Light, fast loading, a fun plinker or could be used for vermin work.

A Marlin 57M - this is a short throw 22 Magnum - 20 rounds and very fast load and fire. This is a 1957 model and is very rare. I have fitted it with a Burris red point.

A Marlin 336 in 30-30 Winchester - good rifle for running game.

A Browning B92 - in 44 Rem Mag - a nice stock and action based on the Winchester 1892. I use this for heavy duty plinking.

Underlevers are fun - not the ultimate in accuracy but good fun and a great history.

I would say if you have problems of choice of underlever in the UK then the Browning BL-22 might be your best best - it has a good reputation. If you can find an Uberti 22LR from the early 70's then I would go for that. Also check what is imported into the UK.

Marlin 39 is an excellent rifle but Marlim have had some BIG quality control issues of late. In fairness I haven't seen a very new 39 but their centre-fire 94's have been utterly hopeless for a few years now. This is why used ones are fetching silly money these days.

Norinco, Henry and several others make lever action .22's but a decent Marlin is probably your best bet, to be honest.

have a look at bsa martini 22

Not a 'lever action' though. It's a falling block which happens to be operated with a lever.

Whats your budget?

Your third link is for a martini-action. It never fails to amuse me how many pillock RFDs can't tell the difference between a lever action, undder lever and martini action.
