Get somewhere to go detecting before you buy either.

Consider the Ace 250 in case you don't like detecting or can't find anywhere.

If you do like it and have plenty of places to go you will probably want to upgrade very soon anyway.

Minelabs are very good but way too heavy IMO. Also a bit pricey for a first machine.

Good luck.

i fancy buying my dad one,but its a hard thing to buy when you know nothing about them.i think he'd love going over his land.me and my mate had a cheap one each when we were kids,we used to go on the rec and get the coins that had fell out of folks pockets under the climbing frames.

Tesoro http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tesoro-Compadre-Metal-Detector-with-5-75-coil-Machine-Only-/230862512362?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item35c07a60ea

BRILLIANT under rated detector small light and will find from the size of a .177 pellet upwards

I have been detecting for a number of years and hold several detectors, I tend to use Minelabs but always carry this Tesoro in the back of my car,

I have often found gold and silver rings plus lots of coins

I got a garret ace 250 as a start up and that's what I still use today, rogers relics is a class forum for this kind of thing! I think you will find a lot of people will say a garret 250 as there cheap and do the job. Iv found tiny things with it, the best was a old roman clipped coin over 1000 years old... It was tiny,,, good buzz aswell :0)

Done a fair bit of detecting in my time-both machines you mention are perfect for beginners-but many more advanced searchers use them as well-they are simple to use and master whilst still managing to detect to impressive depths. It is more desirable to have full control of a basic machine than no idea how to use an advanced unit.

As mentioned make sure you have land to detect on first! It's a bit like shooting permission it gets taken and protected!

Also rather like shooting, if you get hooked you will be looking at other detectors so if you can get out with a borrowed machine or two for a trail do it! Some of the shops will allow this.

I have a Minelab and have done for years £1100 from new it's a cracking bit of kit but heavy! (Don't try to be macho here light is the way) if I had the cash I would get an XP Deus you could swing one of them on the end of your ...... Finger all day long, but they are expensive!

Join a forum and local club if you can?

Not sure where you are but if it's near West Suffolk PM me!

Good luck.

i have the deus had it for nearly 3 years now, it is the best detector out there , why well like what has been said , its about weight . the lighter the better . if you are out there for say 6 hours , they get heavy. get your own land and read about the law regarding finds it is usualy a 50 /50 split with the land owner , and sorry to say this but every thing you find belongs to the crown.

they get heavy. join a club that way most clubs have there own land . failing that get to some rallies . it does depend were you live regarding finds . its about how long people have lived in an area .

i live in south west scotland and i dont get to many finds like old coins , why because there was not many people about . what you are looking for is what people have lost or hidden, there was no banks in them days and people did not have pockets as we know them today.

its not just detecting , you start to get into history to . learning about the kings and queens. about the celts the romans, the saxon the viking age throught to today . the sad think is todays modern coins are made of **** material and will not last long in the ground . i could go on

minelab etrac gave me terrible tennis elbow in the end, good machines , built to last, best for beaches and pasture but weight is awful on all minelabs. Now using the XP Deus, cracking machine and can be swung all day without a problem. Weekend wanderers are a good bunch but also go out with The Metal Detectives, cracking club and they have some decent land, had a weekend in dorset with them recently 50 of us on 750 acres.

Its a great hobby

Check out Staffsmetaldetector website-it gives a performance/depth rating on most machines and the owner, Kevin, will talk detectors all day long even if there is no sale in sight. I seem to have tried about every machine out there but the one to beat is the Teknetics T2. When you find some land use Google Earth to search from above for signs of buildings that have long gone.
