Called Out on the Rape

DB was going back to work today but we checked the weather and Friday would not be a good day to be out so we decided to go out today and DB would go to work on Friday. We headed out for the maize that we shot the other day but we had done a good job on that field as it was devoid of all birds. As we were driving round we saw birds on clover and under oak trees but not in numbers. We had a phone call from one of our farmers say that he had loads on his Rape and could we shoot tomorrow , we said we could shoot today and agreed to meet him at the field. When we drove up he was waiting in the gateway and the birds were in the trees. We checked the wind and told him where we would be shooting from and he left. We watched the field for twenty minutes and nothing moved , there were no birds down on the rape at all only sitting in the trees and in that time none joined . We walked across the field and they all lifted and went off away from the wind so we set up under an Oak tree and put out ten birds on cradles and two on the magnet and waited for them to return. The first birds back came close but would not decoy so we moved the magnet under the next Oak tree in the hedgeline and the next returning birds came into the tree and were shot . As the day went on we shot more birds and placed them under the tree where we had the hide and the one with the magnet under and the birds came back confidently. We believe that the birds were eating acorns and not the rape as the Farmer thought as all the birds we shot had acorns in them and none had rape. We finished shooting at 15.00 and picked up eightytwo pigeons so it can rain as much as it likes tommorrow.
