One for the cigar smokers

It all depends if you have an addictive personality or not. I think a humidor is a good idea, just a small one that holds a dozen. You only need to top up the fluid every month or so and you can pick them up on eBay for around £30. I have around 3 to 4 a year and have done for around the past 10 years. I have a humidor with dozens in it but I don't smoke them all just because they are there.

I used to smoke when I was a teenager and in my early twenties but had around 5 a day and it never progressed to more. I gave up a few years ago and since then have had 2 or 3 cigarettes when I been really drunk but again, never went back to it. As I said, personality and will power has a huge part to play in it.

Sorry but all these posts that you have a couple a year or only smoke when drunk means you are a smoker and are addicted, you may have stopped a few years ago ,but you now smoke when drunk and have a few cigars a year, therefore you smoke.

The question on the doctors form is do you smoke, when you say only a couple when i am drunk the doctor ticks the smoker box.same as your life insurance,if you tick non smoker and god forbid die and a photo of you at the works do with a cigar in your mouth gets seen your life insurance is void, you smoke.

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys, I never asked weather I should smoke just weather a humidor was needed.

I drink a few pints a week but don't class myself as a drinker and don't consider what I'm doing will have much affect on my life. I sure a dozen cigars a year won't hurt you. I'm the only non smoker at work surely all the passive smoking I have to put up with is worse for my health.

I have a very active job, maybe could do with loosing a stone but not too overweight. Live a active life style. I'm sure people that eat fast food most weekends is worse and that's a choice.

Stop enjoying yourself!

Why shouldn't a load of people you've never met feel the need to criticise your choice to indulge in a legal treat...

I'm sorry too, but I had tried to not re-enter this thread as it drifts into LACS-esque anti hysteria, however... I go to the cinema once or twice a year, I occasionally pick up a packet of cashews at the supermarket, I've even been known to wear a baseball cap a couple of times a year. I'm not addicted to any of those things. I won't argue with the point that by smoking a couple of cigars a year you are a smoker - it's patently obvious... You'd be a very light smoker, but a smoker none the less. However, an addiction is a very specific, ongoing, bodily response to (and need for) a stimulant - which simply would not happen with a couple of cigars a year.

What a load of imperious nonsense.

How strange that a cigar importer and blogger tries to justify having a couple of cigars a year when on his blog he states he smokes quite a few cigars and likes a drink with them he is after all cigar and spirits man for his real ale society

As an aside I like your blog it's quite interesting.

An addiction is some thing that is habit forming, you go drinking you have a fag,a habit has been formed,in the drinking scenario two habits have been formed ,I am not being hysterical about anything, just pointing out as politely as I can that if you smoke you smoke and are by definition an addict, please don't fool yourself that it is only a couple when drunk,we all started smoking just a couple, and it is one of the hardest things to quit, believe me been there done that.all I am trying to advise everyone on here is that it is a highly addictive drug that will hook people.

Are Social Smokers Addicted?

Yes, they are. If they weren't addicted, they'd be OK with not smoking on the weekends, but they do. Once they've established to themselves and to the world that they only light up when they drink, it's all downhill from there. Alcohol can trap you into thinking that it's impossible to drink and not have a cigarette at the same time. Once a pattern repeats itself, you're pretty much tagged a regular tobacco user, regardless of what day it is.

That I definitely agree with, but that wasn't the scenario you originally referred to. I'm not sure how twice a year could be considered a habit, however, every Friday night at the pub is getting closer - though if they're perfectly happy to look out and go "****** that, bit nippy outside" I'd personally consider that it would not quite be an addictive habit.

Apologies for the hysterical thing - it was not aimed at you (or any one person at all), but the general way in which seemingly every man and his dog felt the need to pile into a thread and post their comments and thoughts which bore no relation whatsoever to the purpose of the thread. Which I am now, ironically, perpetuating.

can i ask you a few of question please,

1,do you drink?

2,do you ever have anything from the chip shop?

3,do you ever look at the titty models in the paper?

4,do you watch telly?

if the answer is yes i've done it a few times a year, then by your own reckoning your an addict! booze, fastfood, porn and the list could go on forever.

Yes I do, I did stop for 5 years but that's a different story

2,do you ever have anything from the chip shop?

Chips

3,do you ever look at the titty models in the paper?

Don't buy papers

4,do you watch telly?

At the moment no as the weather is blocking my sky signal

if the answer is yes i've done it a few times a year, then by your own reckoning your an addict! booze, fastfood, porn and the list could go on forever.

But none of the above are done on recurring theme I.e I'm having a drink I will have a fag that is a habit forming and that is an addiction.

All the above you can go without,as said I stopped drinking for 5 years.the point yet again I am trying to hopefully convince "part time smokers " is that smoking is highly addictive, and just having a social smoke is already part of an addictive pattern, one that is extremely hard to stop with a good chance of it killing you,now I doubt that looking at titties will kill me unless my wife catches me

your first post on this subject said nothing about linking smoking with drinking.but by your reckoning if i liked to have a chippy tea on a friday i'd be a fastfood addict, because i'm linking fastfood with friday? and as your now a drinker, you are now addicted again after being cured for five years?

The drink smoke analogy is to show how addictions form.

I drink yes, but not at set times or days, but if you associate Friday with chippy then I am afraid to say there is a possibility you have an addiction

Once you associate something with something else you have a habit,a habit is an addiction.

So if you go out with your mates every payday and you have a couple of fags but don't drink, you are still forming an association and a habit which again is an addiction.

Going back to the post earlier, if you were not addicted you would not need to do it,so if you are having a couple of fags while doing the same routine then a habit is there.

If you drink regularly let's say a pint after work,or let's make it the same as my mate, he doesn't drink except for Fridays when his boss pays him,he always has 3 pints and a whiskey in the pub at the end of his street, and is home in time for his wife to order his Chinese takeaway, now if you were to tell him he is an addict he would laugh he only has a couple on a Friday, but the fact is he has two habits, his drink on a Friday and his takeaway,he has formed a habit and this has become an addiction.

The easy way to avoid all the health pitfalls of smoking is simple, stop, don't smoke,a couple is a habit which is an addiction.

And yes I was a smoker,40 a day and I loved a nice big expensive cigar at least once a week,I stopped once for 3years,but on a cold wet night when my tank was stuck in the mud I accepted a cup of tea and a fag off the reme recovery, one fag led to one or two a week led to smoking again.

I have stopped for nine years after seeing a hypnotist,I know the perils and downfalls of smoking and how addictive it can be, but I want to see my grandchildren when they are born so will no longer smoke.

Can the mods not make this a 'smokers only area'?

:D

You have to go outside, you can't smoke in here :)

Just to add not all addictions are bad otherwise most of us shooters would be locked away, the only bad addictions are the ones that will kill you and I think we all agree that smoking will eventually do that.

your right that smokings not good for you,but its a lovely and enjoyable thing to do(in my opinion).this is also my opinion too (so worth nowt to anyone but me),i think your 100% wrong about the addict subject,i think all the things you've described are a habit, not an addiction, and the two are very different.

And by your last line you are a person that has the possibility to stop smoking as you admit you have a habit, but do not want to be an addict,as much as you enjoy smoking I think I could hypnotise you to stop smoking fairly easy,to save yourself a lot of money to buy carts, guns etc book a visit to a hypnotist, £100 spent stopped smoking for life.;)

because a habit is just that,a habit not an addiction.

If your smoking is just a habit you should be able to stop any time right?

So why do people make so much money selling patches?

You could stop today right? Or maybe you need just one more before you stop,or maybe tomorrow.

Habit /addiction tomato /tomato same thing.

i don't smoke,i used to about five years ago.i stopped instantly................because it wasn't an addiction,it was a habit.also because i'd just been told i'd got cancer again (not smoking related in any way) ,but i asked god to help me out,and giving up smoking was my bargaining chip! so i haven't smoked from that day, even though i had loads of bacca and cigars (still got about 30 king edwards in the cupboard not ten feet from me now,and i'd love to smoke one right now!)

Good for you stopping smoking,I admire someone with a faith as strong as you have(something I sadly lack) I hope the cancer was beaten back and you are well.

As for the cigar I could murder a montecristo no5 but realise the consequences if I did.

So on that cheerful note I think we should say no more on the smoking subject and stop the hijacking of this thread.

Cheers mate for an interesting few hours:)
