Redgum
My first 243 was a new Remington 700, though some swear by them they are not the gun they used to be. Got it shooting straight in the end with new trigger and stock, would have been cheaper just to buy a Tikka. That's what I did in the end and don't be put off buying a second-hand rifle, there are far more hardly run in than shot out rifles in circulation. My set up is a Tikka 243 Hunter ( wooden stock ). Tikka mounts/rings, Nikon 4-16x50 monarch (awesome scope), Atec maxim moderator. I use 85gr for fox and muntys, 100gr for Roe and Fallow.(though use 308 mostly on Fallow, 243 is plenty good enough but just like my 308. apache
What are you going to be shooting? I'd buy a very different set-up if I wanted it with NV as a long range foxing tool versus a woodland stalking rifle. Planning any range work? Pheasant Feeder
Depends on your budget, have you thought about Howa? I've one in .223 and a mate has one in .243 and neither of us can fault 'em. He's put a laminated stock on his, whilst I ordered mine with the green Houge stock. In terms of value they're spot on, and it leaves more of your budget for a decent scope.
welshwarrior
Tikka 590 or 595 with S&B 6x42 stalking only or 8x56 if you also lamp foxes. Sonic reflex moderator

Footu
Thanks, read some reviews, remmies are most accurate, Browning a bolt best,' overall' Tikka seems to be ffavorite on this thread though. I think I want a synthetic stock so that will limit my choice a bit.
sixhills 69
You can get some great synthetic stocks for tikka's seen some at the shooting show last year wish CZ did some for there Center fires

In terms of value they're spot on, and it leaves more of your budget for a decent scope. I'm currently after a .243 and considering a Howa. The new rifles look good value for money (especially compared to the new Remington 700 or Savage Edge / Axis I've seen). A local gunshop has a 2nd hand laminated thumbhole stock with stainless barrel and Wildcat Mod for £700. I'm not fussed about the stainless barrel (rather not have it to be honest) but the different stock + mod seems to swing it for me. Can I ask what you think of the two rifles side by side and if you think the laminated one is worth the extra. I won't shoot it too often, particularly not before I complete my DSC1 so not overly concerned about style etc.
Scully
My first was a Remington 700 as I'd always wanted one; very accurate with 100grn ammo but not with anything else. Currently have a Tikka T3 varmint model. It is all the rifle I will ever need. Sorted.

If they have availability I guess it could be one of the best budget options out there, even with RFD costs added.
Subaru_sti5
It's a 770 not a 700 for £435.
Therealchucknorris
It's a 770 not a 700 for £435. Good spot - they even go so far as to call it a Remingtom. Review I just read on Gun Mart doesn't look too bad at all...Worth a punt I think.
njc110381
I can't really find much fault with the T3. It feels cheaply made when compared to an older 595, but at the same time I've never known one not to shoot well and they are reliable. What's your budget? If you're aiming cheap then a Browning A-Bolt isn't a bad gun. My .223 will hold it's own against most factory guns in the accuracy stakes. If you're on limited money I would suggest that you go for a cheaper end rifle to save a bit for the optics. A good scope is vital.
