Friday was going to be wet so we made an early start and went out straight to our rape which we shot the week before as we arrived we found about sixty birds down in the middle of the field, not feeding on acorns but rape. We watched it for about ten minutes but no birds joined so we gambled and went to see the farmer and he gave us the OK . We had to carry the gear over two fields to get to the feeding flock which moved off as we approached. We set up and waited , four birds returned in the next hour so we packed up and walked back the the Disco . Just as we got back the heavens opened so we had adrive round looking for Saturday. We looked at a number of rape fields, no birds , we looked at the Maize stubble , no birds. We drove into a commercial Match fishing venue , parked up and watched the guys getting drowned in the rain but they landed a few F1s . We set out again and found a flock on a maize cover crop which they were shooting and disturbing the birds but they kept coming back. We went to the farm and asked the farmer if we could shoot the maize on Saturday which he agreed.

Saturday saw us full of beans as we thought we were in for a mega day, we drove to the maize and as we pulled up a Green landy stopped behind us. It was one of the syndicate who had seen the birds the day before and decided to have a go. We told him that we had agreed with the farmer to shoot today but as he was part of the shoot he could have first choice . He was only going to walk round so he told us to set up on the maize and he would walk the woods and then go home as he was just going to have a walk. We set up on the maize with wind off our backs , just twelve birds on raised cradles place in the gaps between the stalks. We waited for about twenty minutes before the first bird came back, he did not decoy but flew over at a nice sporting height. As the day went on the wind became stronger and the showers increased but we had steady birds coming to us. The other shooter had gone home . By 15.00 it was all over and the rain increased so we packed up and left. We had collected one hundred and nine pigeons in the hide but it was too wet to lay them out so I did it in the "Man Cave " when I returned home. It was a different day as the birds were very testing in the swirling wind.

Nice bag PC.... good man on offering the other shooter first call on the spot, iv meet many guys that would never do that,

Just wondering if he asked you to leave what would have been the chances of you getting that size bag else where?

Atb stiggy

We would have had to find another feeding flock .

A good recovery after Friday's disappointment.

Have the pigeons finished with acorns 'South of Birmingham?'

They seem to be feeding on the roadside oaks at present . The woods have a good number of acorns still on the floor but when you check them fifty percent are now going soft. They seem to be moving onto the rape and maize with a few on clover towards the city.

The one thing that has happened is we are getting flocks of doves collecting together in groups of thirty to forty which is difficult when you are snap shooting high birds.

Yeah, another great bag PC, there are still literally none around down my way, I had hoped to go out tomorrow but I did a recce this morning and there was nothing, not a single bird on the rape, and none of the maize has been cut yet, it is turning out very much as I predicted last October, a disasterous season for pigeons down my way... :sad1:
