toplever
Looks like a good setup. See you have a MEC with a universal charge bar. Looks like 12 ga. reloads. See you have a separate re-sizer and primer machine also. Non toxic or lead loads? What powder do you use?
pigeon controller
A question to the reloaders as I throw load of empties away each year approx 10,000 . Do you get any advantage if you put a bit more powder in the shell will it increase the speed? Any local reloaders what some empties ? craigpigeonshooter
The reloading machines aren't mine but a good friend who was reloading from some rusty carts that we stripped and used the components to reload into new cases. It's interesting to see when we weighed powders and shot from factory made cartridges how much the weight difference is to what is supposed to be in the cartridge and also the amount of shot that is paired up. He has 1000's of empties stocked up over the years.
Guest cookoff013
A question to the reloaders as I throw load of empties away each year approx 10,000 . Do you get any advantage if you put a bit more powder in the shell will it increase the speed? Any local reloaders what some empties ? sometimes, yes sometimes no. more powder = more cost. some up the anti and reload "appropriate" shotsizes. if shooting alot of pigeons, without having to resort to the dreadded 7.5 clay loads. (can of worms opened). some get a decent clay recipe 24g or 28g, whack in some sixes then blaze away as normal. others load the old classics 32g of #5-6 etc. you can reload 1oz of #6 at 1500fps and that is a decent load. you can even reload 36g+ loads but its going to cost "different". now, without trying to explain the justification of the whole process, the cartridge manufacturers in this country keep the price of the "pigeon" loads very high as not to affect the cost of there much coveted game loads. as a reloader you can do like for like or equivalent, comparing factory #7.5 to homeload #5 is where homeloaders make the most. #5 doesnt even need to be going that fast to make a difference either ! saving on powder. as the cost of lead is identical comparitively, ie normal lead 7 costs the same as normal lead 5-4-3-2-1-0 etc. homeloaders reload because.... value performance legality pleasure low recoil etc... sitsinhedges
A question to the reloaders as I throw load of empties away each year approx 10,000 . Do you get any advantage if you put a bit more powder in the shell will it increase the speed? Any local reloaders what some empties ? The powder dose and type is measured to give an appropriate speed at an appropriate breech pressure so the powder burns efficiently in relation to the weight of the ejected material, wad, shot etc. Just putting more of the same type of powder in would likely just take the cartridge pressures over what the gun is proofed for but you could use more of a slower burning powder that generates its pressures more slowly to gain extra speed. Why would you want to though, it's not as if you're missing many?
turbo33
PC, out of curiosity, what cartridges do you mostly use?
pigeon controller
PC, out of curiosity, what cartridges do you mostly use? I currently using Fiocchi 32 6s, I've used most brands in the past usually selected by the best price per 10,000.
turbo33
Thanks PC. I thought from a previous thread that you were using Fiocchi. The reason I asked was re your post above about more powder. I had a few of them in the cupboard and stripped them to set up my reloader, and put the contents back into new cases. What was interesting was the shot charge was reasonably consistent, but the powder charge was all over the place with around an 10% difference from one cart to another. I may have had a bad batch, but you see to manage very well with them
Guest cookoff013
10% different? whats the average powder weight / highs and lows? thats really interesting. i bet the powder charges are low.
turbo33
23.2grns low to 25.3 high. Looked like Vectan A1, as that's what I use and it was indistinguishable but wouldn't stake my life on it. Might have a root round and see if I have any more to pull apart. pigeon controller
While we are talking cartridges we used to use Lyevale as they were made locally in Stirchley . I was told the other day that Fiocchi although they sound Italian are made in the UK but in my latest batch there is Chinese writing inside the boxes. Anybody have any ideas???
