New Android phone recommendations

Contract is up and I'm due a new phone, what are peoples thoughts? I love the Android OS and am committed to it with music, other accounts and my tablet and so do not want an iPhone. Had one and didn't get on with it. My current and previous phones were HTC and they've been great. So the HTC one is on the shortlist as is the Samsung Galaxy S4, but I've also heard good stuff about one of the new LG smartphones, I can't remember the model but it came out No1 in Stuff magazine. I don't want a "phablet", just a normal sized phone with a decent screen, OK camera and slick web browsing/email. I'm on Vodafone if that makes a difference.

Totally loving my Sony Experia SP. Very fast, seems stable at the moment, long battery life etc.

I could have had the Z1 but decided not to as, A. I wouldn't benefit from it, not being a gamer, B. It's considerably bigger than mine, and C. The contract cost is half of what I'd have been paying for the Z1.

Edit: Just a thought, Vodafone had it on offer as well when I got mine (January) which literally made it half the monthly cost for the same amount of data/calls/texts, but even off offer it was £12/month cheaper.

My missus has the HTC 1 and I went in to buy one but, was talked round by the manager.

Know him well as my last phone, a Blackberry Torch piece of shhhhhh.... was replaced 7 times in 2 years, anyway, I digress, out of the 4 staff there, 2 of them are using Sony's...that spoke volumes to me and I have to say I like my phone more than the missus HTC.

After the last HTC my wife had I'll never go near one again! but a friend and his wife have the HTC one and they love them. The Samsung S3 was great but I've heard the S4 has problems with memory etc. perhaps the HTC one is a lot better than previous models that had many problems.

HTC all the way. I have a HTC one S and cant fault it. My contract is up in March after 2 years and will have the new HTC one.

My last HTC before the one I have now was passed down to the Mrs, she had it a day before putting it on top of the washing basket as she walked down the stairs...yes you can guess...she washed it on 40* before spinning it for 12 minutes. Once she discovered what she had done I took the battery cover off, dried it out and turned it back on....it worked first time. So, HTC gets my vote yet again.

Being a tight wad I have to ask, what's up with your old phone.

If it's ok,why don't you go sim only for 12 months.

Had it 2 years and abused it a bit, it's getting a bit tatty. I dropped it once and replaced the screen with one off ebay, battery is getting a bit tired, missus gets my hand me downs so has her eye on it. Also I've got a very cheap contract with vodafone as I've been with them yonks, so SIM only wouldn't make much difference. And finally,I just fancy a new one!

I had an HTC for a couple of years and really enjoyed it. When it came up for renewal I was recommended a Samsung galaxy 3 mini. It's ok, but the Samsung version of android isn't as good as the HTC one. I've recently bought a nexus 7 tablet and that has the best version of android I've used, so their phone may be a good option. No experience with Sony.

Have a look at the Sony Xperia z1 I have the z and its a great phone! Moved to it from iPhone and prefer it.. If you thihk the z1 is too big Sony have just brought out the z1 Compact... Unlike the Samsung s4 mini and HTC one mini this z1 compact keeps all the same hardware and software features as the bigger one... Super fast snapdragon 800 processor and a 20.7 mp camera as well as retaining waterproofness. The screen size is 4.3 inches and has a lot of sony's advanced screen technology in it... Be worth a look at mate Sony make great quality phones and they are waterproof which is handy for us shooters.

Hope this helped,

Dave

If you're commited to android (I'm an iOS lover) then definitely consider the Sony Xperia Z1. It's fantastic. Screen is great, camera is brilliant and they're waterproof as well. I don't rate samsungs though, they're very bloated and slow compared to the competitors. The HTC one is pretty poor too. They suffer with a lot of battery issues.

If you prefer ios then how can you comment on the battery life of the HTC,as a HTC user that has his linked to an ipad all day sending emails with photos and reports and receiving lots back, using it for lots of calls and then general surfing, and linking it to a laptop in the hotel in the evening,i have to say it is probably better on battery life than the iphone 4 and 4s that i owned, and way way better at actually getting a phone signal, some thing the iphone seemed to be incapable of and what convinced me to go to android in the first place.

we both have the S4 mini, but the "duos" dual sim, dual standby GTI 9192, and the Amoled screen is stunning. Highly recommended. We changed from Blackberry 9860, which were a similar size, but the Samsung is far superior...

Dual sim highly recommended too - coverage everywhere, and actually cheaper than the single sim model on the bay.....dual sim "bit" dead easy to manage too.....

edited to add that battery life is quite good, a good day with serious usage, and two days with light usage
