HDAV
How do you mean? There are cheap rifles and there are cheap shotguns, double barrels are a lot harder to make properly than a single or even 2 singles, throw in factors like limited markets/volume and you have a niche product show me where I can buy a double rifle for £1000 new I'll show you a host of shotguns for that price....... millrace
I was asked by someone new to shooting, take an escort for example and say equal priced rifle,, the rifle deems more component wise, I think his view was say something to shoot a dear being more powerful than a shotty, but the shotty is dearer but in a way I understood what he means 1k buys good rifle but in some cases not much shotgun, but they both have wood trigger single barrel testing etc,,it was a question I can't really answer but got me thinkin about it...... HDAV
£1k buys a lot of semi auto shotgun... Beretta, benelli, winchester, remmington etc etc etc
SSS
I think shotguns are cheaper overall than rifles. Take a brand new Beretta A400 xplor, they're about £1600. Now take a half decent sauer rifle at ~£1400 and put glass and a mod on top of that, it works out at over £2k. You could buy second hand and get more for your money, let's say a used browning 525 for about £800, that compares equally well to a used Tikka t3 with scope and mod. I agree, if you look at the lower end of things then rifles can be a bit cheaper, but as has been said, getting 2 barrels lined up perfectly and working in harmony takes a lot of skill and work, along with fancy engraving, posh timber and a niche market, it soon all adds up. Rifles are normally built for purpose, with fairly plain wood and no engraving, whereas shotguns sometimes come across as quite showy. Jolly
its also market forces there are probably 50 ? 100 ? shotguns in the uk per rifle so the tooling up to make a rifle is consequently far more expensive

millrace
Yes cheaper,,,,lol,, take scopes mods away just bare cost,,it was while walking round shoot show,, his take was a modern engineered rifle was very cheap when compared to ordinary shotty, I think he had a point,, there are way more shotgun owners than rifle so higher volume of sales so it is a case of inflated prices due to high demand, while even tho a rifle has as many parts it it cheaper by virtue of lower sales,,,ie a more realistic value of the goods...... Brad93
There's only the trigger assemble, bolt, receiver and a barrel on a rifle. On an O/U shotgun, you have a single trigger, which is barrel selectable, inertia recocking, two hammers, breakopen action, ejectors, chokes. That's a lot more moving parts / parts that must mate together perfectly. Let alone the finishing, engraving, and the rest of it.
bluesj
How about the difference between a live rifle and an air rifle! picked up a second hand cz .243 with scope, looks and shoots like new for £250. I was offered the same for my very well used pcp air rifle!

In the UK yes (more shotguns) but also many shotguns here are doubles, go to the US where its a different market and doubles are seen as expensive compared to the pumps and semi rifles. Every other type of market higher demand/sales means lower prices....... look at how the price of electronics have fallen .....
