Patternmaster chokes

The duck one gives you a full pattern with a 2 3/4 and 3" shell and modified pattern with a 3 1/2".

The goose one gives you a full pattern with all size shells. It's all down to where the wad is held inside the tube. Also the goose one sticks out 0f the end of the barrel 1 1/2" and the duck only 1".

paddymax,

For what purpose? You can use a patternmaster for lead just fine. I shoot a black cloud medium range steel tube in my mossberg. With HP steel loads it throws a tight, perfect 40 yard pattern and it is good for at least 50 yards with the loads I have. When I run 42g lead 5's through it (only 2 3/4" load the gun will cycle), the pattern is fantastic for pigeons at that range. The benefits of aftermarket chokes aren't just tight patterns. For me the bigger benefit is more even patterns and fewer blown patterns and wayward shot. The black cloud with lead at 40 yards has very few pellets outside of a 4' circle, and very few outside of a 3' circle. It is a very even pattern.

If you want a super tight lead only choke, then you need ot think about turkey chokes. They are designed for heavy (42-56g), size 4-6 lead loads and to keep the tightest pattern possible out to 60+ yards. The goal is to get a half dozen pellets or more in the head/neck of a turkey. The one I shot in my Baikal would hold more than 75% at 50 yards of 2 oz winchesters. I could more or less guarantee 5-10 pellets in the head at that range.

thanks

Those are my walkaround cartridges when i carry my mossberg. It is only manufacturer rated for 3" or larger shells, however the 42's have enough punch to eject. No more recoil than my 20 gauge since the mossberg is a heavy gun with a gas system and the 20 is a light o/u. I also don't take it if i am planning to shoot a full box of cartridges.

For normal pigeon shooting i either shoot my o/u or my franchi semi. One is 1/4+1/2 choke, the other is straight modified. I like the mossberg if i know the birds are going to be way out there or high, but generally it isn't my first choice pigeon gun.
