Does anyone want one ?

Although I am a Casino veteran, who loves playing blackjack and the occasional break on the roulette table, I do not see the need for any more casinos in the UK, certainly not Super Casinos.

In places like Las Vegas, Reno etc they are fine, because the vast majority of punters are visitors, bringing new money into the area with each visit.

Here, the main punters will be locals and when their money is gone, its gone.

Whilst everyone has the choice to go into these places, or not, I can't help thinking its going to create some misery somewhere.

Axe, casino's are not designed to fly, but as Cranfield has said they are designed to relieve people of their money.

I have to admit that I was very disapointed to learn that Manchester had won the bid. I live and work in the North West, my company provides a service to the hospitality industry, therfore we should in theory benefit in a very small way.

We do however have a depot in Blackpool, we've been there around 10 years, and have noticed a marked decline in our business which is Blackpool specific. We are not generally loosing out to competitors, the businesses are quite simply failing. Blackpool really does need a boost, possibly far more than one casino can provide, but it would be a start.

Manchester on the other hand has seen a number of refreshing developments in recent years, Lowry centre, Bridgewater Hall, Vellodrome, to name but a few.

I do think that the government has on this occasion got it wrong, but you have to ask, when have they got it right??

The govt are after money, plain and simple. When it comes down to it, yes the casino will give people employment, but for every pound it makes, someone has to lose a pound.

It might give the area 1000 jobs, but I'm willing to bet it will ruin more than that when people lose money there.

It's bad news all round. As said, it will only suck money from the locality - unlike Vegas who on earth will want to holiday in Manchester?

Whilst I like to gamble, I know it is a mugs game and only punt what I can afford to lose. The national lottery and now super casinos - it's just a mugs tax in disguise.

I haven't played the lottery in about 5 years now, mainly because I took exception to where the "charity money" was being spent.

Mungler

I also stopped doing the lottery an number of years ago when I discovered that the lottery had paid out M£6 to the British Olympic Swimming Team, who managed to come home with nothing more than wet swimming costumes, and some damp towells.

In contrast the Shooting squad received £6000, and came home with a fist full of medals. I was disgusted at the lack of support for my sports representitives, and voted with my wallet.

I actually cant wait.. I will go there on and off when I can. I think that it will help with unemployment in manchester... although I also appreciate that it may also bring more crime to that area as well.

I on a selfish basis only look forward to it.. so I can go for a weekend away trip.... but then again hull is due to get a large casino ... so that might be the best way forward.

Just because they build a casino doesn't mean people are instantly going to go in and start loosing their shirts.

There have been casinos around all over the uk for years, nobody moaned about those. Combined with on-line gambling, betting shops and scratch cards I don't think this means a lot.

A fool and his money are soon parted, personally I like the odd flutter but I realise that on the whole I will loose and I go into it all knowing that and limit myself accordingly.

Where I do disagree is this whole "gambling addiction is a disease" malarky, utter ****.

I can see this costing the tax payer, and the non gambler, money. Loose your shirt and declare yourself bankrupt with loan money, credit card money and overdraft cash being "written off" means we will all pay higher fees, rates and charges.

Then comes the issue of this "disease" being recognised and treatable on the NHS, don't get me started.

If people want to loose their shirts then let them, don't let it cost me any money though.

Not true, they will borrow money to try and win back what they lost, I mean everybody has to win at some point don't they.

What is the difference between a gambling addict and a dirty junkie who is after a fix? The tuxedo.

They will lose their shirts, followed by their families and houses. We the tax payers then pay to bring the innocent party and their children up in council accomodation.

Sweeping generalisation? Prove me wrong.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. If they want to stimulate business at casinos why don't they just get rid of the 24hour rule and then tourists etc can have a punt. The government would then know what the effects of liberalising it would be without all this b******* - How many civil service hours have been wasted on this so far?

It would be nice to spontaneously go to a different casino in a different town. I love casinos but unlike almost everything else bad for me I don't feel I could get addicted to gambling - I like to spend money in a casino, not lose it. Blowing £50 or whatever for a couple of entertaining hours playing blackjack is good value to me.

They have scrapped the 24 hour rule. You can now just turn up, i think it has been like this for a while.

still havent been in one.

still plan to one day. but preferably in las vegas.

i doubt super casino's will do anything worse than every other form of gambling. if you have that kind of addictive personality (so that's why i havent been inside one, duh  ), then you will gamble elsewhere.

Time was when the MAFIA couldn't get a look in this country, now thanks to Mr Bliar and his cronies they'll be all over. There will be trouble, as if Manchester needed any more!

I've been to Vegas, once, never again. I won big time (well almost enough to pay for the trip) but still wouldn't set foot in that place for no money.

All the Blairites want is the take off in taxes...what they haven't figured out is the rake off!

I don't get out much...

If you're ever in the area there's an interesting Casino in Tangiers Morocco - its beautiful - but all the punters are cannabis growers/smugglers from the Rif mountains laundering their money. You keep your eyes on the chips and your mouth shut!
