hoggysreels
Assuming there is a bore of .729" (Full choke) .. would half choke equate to .709" I want a barrel bored out from full > half choke ... cheers
Underdog
.729"-.690"(common full choke dimension)=.039". Call it .040" difference and half it. So plus .020" to .690"= .710". So your correct. U.

hoggysreels
Undrrdog ... did you source an adjustable reamer specifically for the job ? Ive been looking at a 17mm - 19mm adjustable reamer myself (biggests reamer l own is 7.4mm) .. lve used reamers myself in the past .. reaming out valve stems/guides etc ... l.prefer to convert to metric, but can happily use imperial if need be .. Have you any instructions regards to correct alignment ... at what rate to you ream.out (what depth of cut do you initially start with? ... do you run it through at .001" ... per cut etc ? Any advice appreciated mate ... slightly concerned about keeping the cut inline with the barrel ... lm quite mechanically minded (28 years working on Land Rover/Rover/Jaguar) .. then l regained partial sanity and escaped the mechanical world .. will gladly absorb advice given ... Cost wise! .. is it better, or more practicable paying to have it done .. l'd prefer to do it myself, but common sense rules .. whats you're reccomendation squire ... cheers m8 Edited April 7, 2014 by hoggysreels
Azzurri
I'd send it straight down to Nigel Teague to get some choke taken out....he does it right and it will be bored true. Azzurri.
bruno22rf
If its a cheap gun then just saw a bit off the barrel-if you go 1/4" at a time till you get the choke you want then bobs your uncle.
Underdog
I saw a smith do it by hand! I did mine by hand. The reamer follows the bore. By hand I changed my position in relation to the gun all the time too. Just a bees whisker at a time. The polishing mop is just cloth rapped rod in a drill and wet and dry paper. It will get hot so use some oil and dont let it get too hot. Again changing position. U.
hoggysreels
Was going to ream and finish with honing .. just got to pick up correct reamer .. cheers for the info m8 ..
kent
don't run a reamer by hand, the time taken in reaming out a choke correctly is setting the thing up to perfect true. a little error makes a big difference in how the gun prints

I have done five guns by hand, double barrels at that and all shot fine and to POA. How many have you done Sir? U.
DutchPigeonHunter
Before trying to do this by hand I'd look if the bore is chrome lined first.

welshwarrior
Nothing wrong with doing it by hand spill boring is the best way but modern reamers will do a perfectly acceptable job for most shooters. I use choke reamers not adjustable reamers as the later can chatter, always go from the chamber end and use correct diameter guides.
hoggysreels
Thinking practically, its possibly better to have it done for me rather than.purchasing the reamer/cutting oil and fabricating guide rod and sleeves etc.... l live on the Wirral, so my question is ... Is there anybody on the forum that would ream out my single barrel 12 bore shotgun On second thoughts l would prefer taking it to a ... "3/8" choke or second choice "1/4" lf anyone can or knows of someone who could sort it out for me, please contact me via PM ... cheers Edited April 9, 2014 by hoggysreels
welshwarrior
There is or at least was a proper gunsmith in Elsmere port he would do it I think it was Jackson but could be wrong.

kent
Kent. I have done five guns by hand, double barrels at that and all shot fine and to POA. How many have you done Sir? U. None as I get a double gun done for just less than £30 by a pro with all the kit. I suppose it seems cheap to buy a few reamers, rods and turning a few bushes up if your comparing going the gunshop route with the shop doubling the price adding vat etc. Fact is its ok saying a gun shoots to POA but some insist on sending it to Teague to get a so called better job than I might (not that I think that is necessarily true mind) though for the faff of setting up with the correct fitting bushes rod etc., etc its truly not worth it for me on time, money or satisfaction and yes I don't think its as good a job.
