Rimfireboy
Well, after using the last of my CCI 17grain TNT jacketed hollowpoints this morning, I've come to the conclusion that they aren't as effective as the ballistic tipped Hornady and Winchester rounds that I normally use. They just don't seem to have anywhere near the knockdown power of the BT's. Anybody else tried them?
kent
To be fair I found unpredictable terminals par for the course with HMR with all bullets I never was sure if it might break up prematurely, pencil, blow the quarry to bits or just slip in the quarry and kill it of fright or something

cooter
They have their place. I use the 20grn when there is a chance of clipping an unseen blade of grass before hitting the quarry, which isn't as daft as it reads, it just requires a little thought as you decide which mag to engage. They are also very good on Canada's and the odd surprise fox.
Thunderbird
I've had good results with the CCI 20s, never used the 17s.
Whitebridges
I use Hornady and Winchester 17g BT's mainly both of which are excellent in my gun. I have tried the CCI Gamepoint 20g HP which happen to be very accurate. They do over penetrate small vermin though. I will be sticking with ballistic tipped ammo. They are also very good on Canada's and the odd surprise fox. you might wish to experiment with that some, I have personally had lots of 40 grain .22 bullets deflected from their true path by grass and also had a 100 grain .243 make one heck of a mess of a fox after it hit a little cover, also once seen a Fallow hit in the neck for a perfect kill with a 140 grain 6.5mm (a great cover beating bullet supposedly) it was aimed at the heart the shooter admitted when I commented on his great shooting though ! We found a tiny willow twig was the cause on that one
Fisheruk
It doesn't make a scrap of difference what I feed mine. 17gr all within reasonable groups. 20gr the point of aim is different. So I stick with 17gr. Cheeper is best for me.
Dekers
I have tried most types of HMR ammo but for field use the 17g V-Max types win hands down overall for me, and give consistent, effective results.
Salop Matt
17GN is all i used in mine but always wanted to see a 20GN softpoint to give a bash on crows and fox ! ATB Matt
Thunderbird
I shot a fox with a CCI 20g 'small game' hollow point and it dropped like a good 'un. Sensible range though, only about 704 yards or so...

dadioles
I have found that .17hmr ammunition is far more consistent than .22lr but having experimented with just about everything I could get hold of I just use Hornady 17g V-max which have proved to be accurate and reliable (and readily obtainable!). One thing I do not do is swap different makes or types of bullet. That can only lead to inaccuracy due to different trajectories and my brain would not keep up. Find a good one and stick to it. In terms of killing power. They are all devastating when used appropriately at sensible distances. Did I misread the post by Thunderbird? 704 yards...?
