QuantumX
So i finally have my License, took nearly 15 weeks but its here now.. Now been researching like crazy what gun to have, and have tried a number for fit, and the Browning and Beretta's I list seem to be good fits.. So using a poll I wanted to see what others on this group would pick for the first gun.. (for a bit of fun and self validation) My criteria for choice where: 1. New.. (Why because i just wanted new) 2. Must last a life time and hold value (in case i want to keep for many many years or upgrade) 3. Must fit me, these options do... 4. Must be a sporter, because i wanted an all rounder... 5. Budget MAX £1800.... So from my poll you can see what i narrowed it down to and this Wednesday I intend to buy one... So question is what would you buy

TIGHTCHOKE
Spend your time going to grounds and shops that will let you actually fire the weapons at some clays!

Got say I wouldn't buy new, but if you want the rest above then (fit being top priority) MK38 job done..... http://www.brierleyguns.com/brierley_bloxham/brierley_blox.php You'll loose 20% walking out the shop, be gutted the first time it gets a scratch, and the gun you start with wont be what you end up with..... £1k gets you a good used beretta/browning/miroku and plenty left for fitting, lessons and carts Edited April 26, 2014 by HDAV

88b
Life would be boring if we all like the same thing. Personally I'd look at a MK38, depending on your size look at a 32", I love mine.

mda998
i wouldn't buy new again, i've done it too many times and lost so much like someone else said generally "the 1st gun you buy wont be forever" you will buy a 30 inch gun then shoot with other people who say get a 32 inch, you will then eventually change and so on browning 425 in 32 inch (rare), (last you a lifetime) Edited April 27, 2014 by mda998
HDAV
I bought a 30" do all gun, still have it it's a 3" steel proof MC 525, recently bought a 32" miroku 3800, fixed choke trap gun (for shooting trap....)The 525 still works, I still have it but it doesn't come out so often these days, but it's still worth what I paid for it, couldn't say that if I bought it new..... Hardwoods Green
Both Browning and Beretta sporting stocks are unlikely to fit you as they are very different in terms of cast and drop.

rich_morris
I voted B525, because that's the one that fitted ME best out of that list. That's no use to you though! I eventually went for a B725 (32"), after trying all the above, plus more. That was the one that fitted me. All of those guns will last a lifetime, and will depreciate in value similarly. If the B525 fitted you, then look a Miroku MK38 too. As said above, and I have heard before, that usually, if a Browning fits you well, a Beretta will not, and vice versa. Enjoy which ever you choose! Dominicrobed
I shoot a beretta and a browning. Both fit me fine and I shoot well with both guns. Buy what feels right for you.
HDAV
Why no Browning 725 on the list?
Northern Gunner
That's not what I've heard. Ditto!!! Wouldn't go anywhere near one (only my opinion), you can get a top grade 2nd hand Miroku/Berretta with your £1800.
QuantumX
Just an update.. my local RFD does not have ability to try the guns, so dry mount only. i have used club guns and tried a few mates guns while not the same models were same makes.. for me i found both browning and beretta fitted good. Personally i'm not interested in a second hand gun, just not for me, all personal choice.. I understand other have different views. As for the 725 yes I did have a look, seems nice but i just did not like the orange lettering, a stupid thing but none the less enough to put me off. (trying to be very honest) Atm i'm leaning toward the 686 EVO, reviews seem really solid, and i like the look of the gun more than the SIlver Pigeon. HDAV
2 points: 1: you don't look at the gun while shooting 2: buyers buying UN fired is where the secondhand bargains come from

jeffjjack
The first gun I purchased I changed within 3 months due to dry mount in shop not being good enough plus lack of experience.....I agree with posts above, buy cheaper and try a few guns (you'll always get the same money back if a little less but you will have better knowledge of what you want)... Then if you really want a new gun and still have your heart set on one you can buy a new model.. I personally wouldn't due to the money you lose just walking out of the shop but that is my personal preference. Buy what fits and suits you.. I'm a afraid its all trial and error at first but at least with a second hand gun you won't loose much money and more importantly won't be so disappointing. Good luck
Westward
For my money - and it was my money after having 686E for 5 years - the only sub £2K Beretta I'd consider now as a sporting clays gun is the Prevail 1. The SP1 is nice enough and the EVO too, somewhat dated but otherwise alright, but the Prevail is just a better balanced, smoother handling gun which incorporates all the worthwhile technical features of the 692. The Prevail 1 has never suffered from the ejector timing problems with the early SV10s and mine has been flawless for 2½ years. Everyone who's ever tried my Prevail from committed Browning owners through to Perazzi lovers have been impressed at how well it points, moves and shoots. rich_morris
As for the 725 yes I did have a look, seems nice but i just did not like the orange lettering, a stupid thing but none the less enough to put me off. (trying to be very honest) The orange lettering and engraving is what put me off the gun initially. But when my head was behind the barrels, I changed my mind. I actually went into the shop with a Beretta Evo high on my list of guns to look at...(having owned/shot the same Beretta for 20+ years, I just wanted something a bit newer, longer barrels, etc and to stop me getting headaches when shooting) Turns out that since I bought the gun at age 16, we didn't fit each other quite like we used to. john m
Got a Browning 725 32'' ex-demo from my local RFD last year good balance with the 32'' barrels.
QuantumX
So after some deliberation and taking in some of what had been said about second hand, I kind of compromised "slightly" I managed to get hold of a Beretta Prevail 1 Sport (4 months old) in mint condition for £1100 so saved myself a good few hundred quid. Not the most popular gun with those on here but fitted me. Not just to try it out properly at the local ground this weekend...
