Recipe for 410 BB load anyone

Recommended Posts

If it's trapped or snared foxes, then you don't need anything big at all. I use a live cage trap, and dispatch with Eley fourlong (12.5g of No.6). I've also (a few weeks ago) ambushed a small vixen with the same load at about 12 yards. Dropped dead on the spot.

With a big shot like BB at close range, ricochet is also a lot more possible, I'd be quite cautious about it.

Agree with that.

For a .410, i'd reckon a smaller shot size would be much better for a fox. BB in such a small load is a waste of time. I'd bet that at 20 yards a 2 1/2" BB load would pattern poorly. The biggest i'd use in the .410 would probably be around a size 4,but 5 or 6 would be ok. They will provide a better pattern density than a BB and still have good energy at any range that you'd really want to fire a .410.

There are a couple of loads in the Lyman 5th Ed for 2.5" 410 using Alliant 2400 but no idea if the other components are available in UK. I think these loads would have been tested by Lyman with smaller shot than BB but like others on here have said smaller shot would do the job any way. If you PM me your email I will send the Lyman data for you to use at your own risk.

Looking to reload a batch of 2.5" hulls with BB shot and need a recipe using Alliant 2400 if any one has one or can point me in the right direction of 410 reloads in general.

much appreciated, Keith

Give it a go Keith - A google search shows a fair bit of information about 410's and heavy shot loads. Highly recommended for Armadillos apparently. :)

How dull life would be if enthusiastic amateurs didn't explore the boundaries, if it's legal, use your common sense and give it a try, then report back and tell what you think.

The only downside is if you screw it up, typing can be difficult ...

I reload 410 (by hand), and I suppose you could load BBs. I've got a load of 12 bore BB shells around, so might cut one up and have a look as to what sort of numbers you'd get in a 2.5" 410 casing. Might need some flour to act as a bit extra packer though, else you could end up with a fair bit of compressed/crushed shot, and also possibly pressure problems, if the back end of the load is moving into the front end.

In fact, rather than flour as a packer, you could just use a mix of BB and No. 7 shot, with the smaller shot acting as a packer. Reduces the BB load, but also fills a few gaps.

Hmmm ....

Thanks for the posts fellas,

reloaded a dozen or so 1/2 oz (25 x BB's) with 14.5gn of Alliant 2400 & roll crimped on drill press and after testing grouping on some timber earlier this evening at required distance I feel I would be more confident in using these than number 6 loads on said quarry as they definitely appear to have more punch/knockdown power than the smaller shot size.

Using them in a silenced 410 so as to keep the noise down over that of the 12g that would wake all the village up as and when put into practice.

Now just time to have a sit and wait for Charlie.....

If you're a fan of the 410 this will make you smile.

That's pretty obvious. But, as has already been pointed out, at .410 range you'd be better off with a smaller shot size so as to help ensure a decent pattern is fired on target. I don't think BB in a 12 gauge is the best shot size for foxes, so I wouldn't bother with the .410.

I'm not saying you won't kill any foxes with your new loads, just you could make something that would more than likely make it easier for you to kill them.
