Raw dog food

Any of you gents/ladies feed your dog on a raw diet?

I've read up a little on this subject and realise that it isn't as straight forward as one would think and serious thought must be given into nutrition and amount etc.

I've been toying with the idea for a while so would be very interested in your thoughts on the advantages, disadvantages, different diets/ingredients, cost would be on this.

Thanks in advance

I tried it for a while to see if it helped with my terrier's epilepsy, it didn't so stopped as good quality dried kibble so much easier and both dogs do really well on it.

I did find that the proponents of feeding raw can be very militant about it and that in some cases their way is the only way and in lots of ways the argument of the militant raw feeders was full of holes.

Mine get both from time to time. Mixed as well. Some say that dry and raw should never be mixed but I've had no problems, so far.

Raw tripe, raw lungs, heart, kidneys all the usual. The only thing I don't give is bones and hot/warm food although know many that do, without any obvious problems.

My preference (for the dogs) is raw tripe minced and a handful of dry kibble. The down side with frozen tripe is the time it takes to thaw and the stench.

I am half way there, I feed my dogs a complete biscuit (Harringtons) and mix of raw beef, tripe, chicken all minced and bought online frozen. They do really well on it look great and love their feed times.

I am sure there will be someone along soon to give you more info.

I've fed RAW for quite a while now. I also have weaned litters on RAW. To start off with I measured quantities but now I feed by eye. My lot get anything I can get. I buy minced tripe & chicken but I get regular free supplies of lamb & fish from various sources. It's like everything, you need to get organised & have a system.

Fed raw for years, last few weeks had problems with my supplier so fed complete. I've noticed the increase in **** & smell feeding dry food, surely the amount of cereal content? Going back to feeding raw as the dogs fare better & I like to see them wolfing their bait down rather than picking at it. My raw consists of chicken carcasses & skin, lamb ribs, beef scraps etc. The dogs get fish once a week if I have it, mackerel or trout. Also feed liver/heart etc occasionally. I'm no expert but the dogs are happy, fit & healthy on it....heard people say they need veg etc included but I've worked dogs hard & they've been fine

Raw? used to but only give beef bones raw now (too many issues with storing raw and had a couple of issues with bugs). It cost me nothing back then but I now feed either a complete (for my convenience big bin outside kennels) or home cooked fresh game and vermin also fish oily fish or white fish (sometimes very fresh and raw heads and skeletons when I return from a fishing trip) always with rice and vegies meat or fish . If you give your dog raw fish heads expect it to take a time to get used to them but when they do get used to them they relish them and its good for their coats (blast frozen sardines are good).

Too much meat is a big mistake the protein content is too high and it will damage your dog and certainly effects its behaviour as the dog is an omnivore not a true carnivore like a cat (and even cats get other veg. nutrients from eating the full carcass / gut content etc). I have a theory that a lot of dogs that eat sheep and cattle dung are not getting enough green stuff in their diet, frozen peas added to its diet might help if you suffer this it certainly helped my dogs and they are exposed to dung daily

We "people and dogs" all perform better when well fed and suffer fewer health issues. If you ate from Mc Donalds twice a day you could expect problems to arise in your physical and mental performance so why should we expect different from our dogs. Balance is what is required and an increase or decrease in calories depending on exercise levels
