rwade545
Decided that I would like a sxs for game shooting. Having spent most of my shooting allowance on a beretta 682 ltd I was a bit tight for a SXS. Looked at a few but most in the price I was looking at were loose or pitted. Came across this Victor Saraqueta side lock for not huge money. Was tight on the face but last person had a rubber slip on extension pad that had made the last 3" of wood go nearly black and the finish on the stock was pealing off. The action was very stiff but it worked and my project began. First off was to remove the side locks, these were full of grime and after much cleaning with a toothbrush and oiling there were clean. The rest of the action was not much better after finally removing it. So once again toothbrush, cotton buds and some frog lube to try and smooth it up. The wood was stripped down with nitromors ( green one) which is cheaper in tesco then B&Q. I first steamed the dents and sanded down to 2500grit and refinished it on tru-oil but was unhappy with the finish. I restripped it and then refinished with Trade Secrets grain sealer and 3 oils. This was around 5 coats of alket oil, 10 of the rapid oil. I didnt use the TS-95 oil exept for wet sanding down the grain sealer. after letting it cure for a couple of days it got a polish with burnishing cream from trade secrets. The finish now has a lovely glow, the action is smooth and after the addition of an orange recoil pad the LOP is 14 3/4 inches, and balance on the hinge pin. Cant wait to get it out and try it on clays before the season starts. Think it looks like a lot of gun now, especially considering the price I payed. I also like the satin hand rubbed oil finish. MrPhantom
Great post - really like what you've done. I'm thinking of doing the very same thing to my sxs. Like the traditional look of the orange pad - is that a 'Silvers' pad?
rwade545
Hi, looked at getting a silvers pad but at £30 direct from them I could not justify that. Got the orange pad off eBay for 11. Going to club after work tomorrow to test it.
Beretta06
That's a very straight grained piece of tree :-)
WelshAndy
Looks very nice kind of makes me want to change the black recoil pad I fitted to my sons 20 bore.

rwade545
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RP6-Rubber-Recoil-Pad-1-Thick-/271235801836?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item3f26e9e2ec like to recoil pad I used. These don't have any metal inserts like the pachmyr ones so can grind as much off as you need. They are a softer rubber compared to others so should help with a bit of the recoil compared to the hard rubber silvers style ones.

rwade545
Well, bit of an update, decided that as the sun was out I would go to the clay range. Left the o/u in the cabinet and only took the sxs and 150 cartridges. With the 24/28 gram clay loads recoil was quite acceptable. Put a couple of black diamond 30gram no6 in and that was totally different. Gun performed perfectly, manages to shoot 21/25 on a round of skeet, was happy with that with double triggers and 1/2 and 3/4 chokes. Nexy question- what cartridges do people recommend? I use black diamond in the o/u s but thinking of something a bit softer on the shoulder. 30-32 gram number 5/6s. can be 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 chamber. ? hull imperial game? rwade545
thats the one, Black Gold, the gin and tonic when I got home must have been stronger then I thought. I usually use blue diamond for clays.
