ditchman
Had a bad day on the clay range during the week with the Beretta a303..got 12, would have shot myself , but would have missed ! so back to a sxs i was given, a nice little No 4 , 26" barrel, will tell about the chokes later ! Decided to have a couple of hours next to the barley on the management strip, didnt take the dog as we intended to drop them on the grass, just wanted to try out the No4...to cut a long story short, i did good, and every bird i shot left a cloud of feathers in the air, my old sidelock which i sold was choked cyl & 1/4...and have used that config' for many years..used to kill the birds but never "smoke em"...but this little No4 just smoked em....got back home (we only shot 11 between us), could have shot 35-40...but they would have gone well in the crop so left them be for another day...flapper worked a treat.....i digress !....got home and measured the chokes....1/4 and to my surprise 3/4 !! i was using plasi wads so the shot would have been a little tighter maybe....no wonder they were getting smoked !! have put a couple of pics up using the MOD netting...and the "venue"...i have also put up a "choke chart" for those interested as there are so many threads about choke....DONT USE IT AS A BIBLE only a guide..... marsh man
Hi Ditchman.......I have used a sxs all the time I have been shooting, I now use a B S A 2 3/4 with the same chokes as your gun . I use the same gun for everything ,duck, game, and pigeons, the only time I change guns is when there worn out and then I take them to the police station and let them have it as there not worth spending money to have them done up. When I was younger and stronger I used a Midland Gun Company 3in ..32in barrels full choke in each barrel , the only drawback in a hide was the length of the gun but you soon got used to that , and if you decoyed well out you didn't have to swing the gun to much, I used that gun for about 20yrs until I stood more chance getting injured that what I was shooting at. Cranfield
My old SxS is choked 1/4 and 3/4 , I think that was the standard configuration for most of them. Its my favourite tool for most shooting, as it fits well and being a non ejector, I don't have to go hunting empty cases.

Penelope
I believe you are right, my 1923 Wallace is choked 1/4 & 3/4. My old SxS is choked 1/4 and 3/4 , I think that was the standard configuration for most of them. Its my favourite tool for most shooting, as it fits well and being a non ejector, I don't have to go hunting empty cases. The same, although my Midland 3" is used for the duck now with steel, although the Wallace was used with bismuth for some time, but just too expensive now. wymberley
showing my lack of knowledge now.....until the boys started posting i thought the 1/4 & 3/4 was an unusual combination............switching after 30 odd years with the No2 to this No4 might be the best thing ive ever done !! The "30 odd years" is possibly a clue. Shooting goes in cycles and in the early 80s open chokes were back in vogue. Fine for the driven shooting then, but now with higher birds being de rigeur, things have moved on yet again. The chokes that you mention were never any good for pigeon apart from decoying at shorter ranges with smaller shot and particularly as - unless the gun had been patterned and actually shot as specified - barrels nominally bored as detailed rarely achieved the expected performance in practise, especially the TC. evo
great pics,,,I wont use anything else other than my 1974 eibar jabe sxs, 28" barrels and full and 3/4 choked great little gun and not worried if it gets scratched unlike my shooting buddy with his £5,000 browning, he,s terrified to take it out the bloody bag  atb Evo
