KFC
Disco 300tdi squeal under acceleration Hi chaps and chapesses.300tdi manual.Had a water pump fail recently which I changed and replaced the belt, 7v.Soon afterwards a squeal developed which I assumed was the tensioner bearing. I've just replaced the tensioner and I've got the same noise. The noise sounds like the squeal that occurs with a dry bearing and it happens when I'm accelerating. It disappears as soon as I lift my foot off the throttle and reappears as soon as I start putting my foot down again. It makes this noise in all gears but it doesn't start as soon as I release the clutch but once I'm moving so I don't think it's the clutch release bearing.A few weeks ago I topped up the gearbox. I was told by the carparts shop that 300tdi's that it used ATF in the gearbox. Is this correct?Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance KFC
bigman
My 300 has ATF no worries , not sure on the squeal but I have heard of the penny trick to align the pump motar or summit like that
Kes
Fan belt is slipping, check tensioner again and look for rubber deposit on all pulleys- clean with spririt and brush and dry thoroughly, should sort it.
KFC
Thanks for replies. I don't think it's the belt slipping. Tried 1p and even 2p trick. Cleaned belt & pulleys, reversed belt. Tensioner alignment marks are ok. It's happening at slow speed now as a squeak-squeak-squeak as I set off and then it gets faster. It doesn't happen in reverse. Can only assume it must be a lay-bearing in the gearbox. Unless antone else has any ideas?
barney 66
Check your propshaft joints, lad at work had this, I put new U J,s in it just in time as the casing had just started to wear through
aga man
Is there anyway you can take it for a spin up the street wit the belt taken off? [ bearing in mind you will have no power steering or water pump]. This would rule out the belt if the noise is still there. A haynes manual does recommend ATF for the manual gearbox but i have met a few farmers that put any oil in without too many issues.

Cannon
It could be your alternator pulley bearing. If you can remove the belt, check the pulley and one way clutch are functioning as they should be, and aren't making noises.

Can only assume it must be a lay-bearing in the gearbox. Unless antone else has any ideas? It's not a lay shaft bearing, the lay shaft is used in every gear except 4 th. As suggested try a quick run with no belt, or spray the belt with WD40. I've had a lot of trouble with pattern belts, even though they are the exact same length as the original belt. KFC
Has this sorted it ? they don't take long to do Yes thanks Barney, didn't really have the best tools for the job but WD40, a 1lb hammer, a drift and a G-clamp sorted it. Now the squeal has gone I can hear all the other strange sounds a '94 Disco makes
barney 66
Similar tools to what I had to hand at work when I did for a mate, only had a vice instead of G clamp, glad its sorted
