steve_b_wales
Reading an article in Sporting Gun magazine by Jason Harris, he stated that the best oil to use on the piston mechanism on semi auto's is motor oil,due to it being able to withstand the heat generated by the hot gases. wraivi
John Moses Browning liked it too, because of its adherence and lubrication efficiency at both ends of the temperature spectrum. There wasn't alot if choice around back then. I use Lucas red gun oil, which was developed for use in u.s. army machine guns, where high operating temperature was a major factor. Its about £7 a bottle on fleabay, lasts ages and really helps. Seems to make the carbon residue removal easier from the mag tube and piston, where I use it most. As it happens, Lucas are a large manufacturer of motor oils and lubricants.

figgy
Mobil1 left over from a previous car. It works great on the action in ou and piston tube n semis. Normal gun oil is too thin and dries to quickly. Bit of WD40 on the carbon and a rub with a green plastic pan scrub it looks like new. Duckman91
I have used motor oil but I get the army issue gun oil by the crate from work when it goes "out of date" but there's nuting wrong with it. it's a bit more viscous than normal gun oil. brett1985
whats the score with using 3in1 oil on the piston and such on a semi auto?
figgy
whats the score with using 3in1 oil on the piston and such on a semi auto? Nothing apart from its a bit thin and burns with the hot gasses. Decent engine oil is designed to operate at high temps and to stop carbon build up so works better at keeping the carbon off the steel piston tube and parts. steve_b_wales
I found some Castrol GTX in my shed. That should be okay to use.
figgy
Be fine as castrol gtx is a decent oil, will last years. The newer long service oils would be better for our guns as they are low ash and sulphur, if you can get a little bottle of top up oil from somewhere.
