shootgun
I noticed today, my car does smoke quite a bit at start up, for a few seconds, than back to normal. Is it something i should be worried about? Thanks!
ditchman
if it has a rotary pump that is normal....as soon as the engine cools the rack in the pump is moved into excess fuel for starting as soon as it starts the governors thro the rack back into the normal position....if you have a landrover with a dps pump that is why you do not touch the throttle when starting from cold ..as it cancels out the excess fuel position........... shootgun
I'm not into mechanics, hence the question... the car is a VW Golf 1.9 TDI, and the engine was worm when i noticed, as i was coming home from work and i stopped in the way to grab a few things... Cannon
How old is the car and how many miles are there? If it's high miles it could be worn valve stem seals

superspark
No body has asked what colour the smoke is. The colour can lead you in the right direction. For example, blue smoke would indicate that oil is seeping in to the combustion chambers and being burnt. Black smoke while engine is under load could indicate worn out or faulty fuel injectors. White smoke could indicate that the head gasket is leaking small amounts of water into the chambers. To find out if there is any engine damage it would be advised to have a compression test carred out on the the cylinders. All diesels do smoke a little on start up, so if this is the case then theres no real problem to be worried about.

Nah mate dont worry about it at all , if you tinker round town normally then open it up it does get rid of all the crud that going through the inlet manifold and the egr valves on golfs seem to collect more than normal , i call it self cleaning ! bikemad24
soon as i start mine up a puff of black smoke comes out,and thats it then no smoking after that. id say there there nothing wrong there. its just a little unburnt fuel passing through on start up. if an injector is staring to fail normally the engine will take a little time to start as the injector will be leaking fuel down the return line. easy to diagnose just ask a garage to do a metering test this can be done with injectors in situ, the just add little metering bottles to the return line on each injector and measure the amount of fuel being returned back to the tank/fuel filter.. but again why bother, by the sounds of it your car is fine. like i said i work on diesels EVERY day. from cars to tractors to cranes and even the odd boat.
