Terry P
I have decided to get some protection for my ears since using homeloads(seem much louder). I want something tidy and neat that allow me to still hear the geese and ducks heading my way. 99% of my fowling is done on the foreshore so it needs to be hardy and not expensive as I am only a poor window cleaner. So what are you chaps using. Thanks
ayano3
Peltor electronic sportac ear defenders. Not cheap but really good. Only just started using them, but I hear far more using these than I do without them due to tinnitus. Well worth the money. Cost in the region of £90 but what price do you put on your hearing. Don't be like me and close the gate once the horse has gone.

Kes
I have reached the age of regret - I still have the hearing after years of shooting and use electronic ear defenders - very much recommended where the noise from your quarry brings you alive. If you manage by sight get some cheaper ear plugs - both work but one is a **** of a lot cheaper.
ayano3
I hear things through mine I have not heard for a few years. The other bonus is you can turn them right down or off when the Mrs starts nagging about going shooting when she has a stack of jobs she wants doing. kent
I use simple foam ear plugs from the Builders merchant in a big multi pack. One use only, I find them the most comfortable and ear muffs to restrictive and prone to damage/taking a dip on the marsh. Put them in before you loose anymore hearing, I or rather my family noticed the changes in my hearing just over 12 months back, watch the dog if you want to know you if you have inbound fowl
Terry P
Had a look at the peltors, they look quiet bulky, are they waterproof as I cannot find where it says if they are or not. I don't want to use the foam ear plugs as they drive me mad I used to have to wear them in work and hated them, plus I don't want to have the spend the flight watching my dog, hearing whats going on is all part of the experience. Thanks for the replies Edited August 14, 2014 by Terry P

Scully
I have used the plug-in type ones for years with the little valve and three 'fins' on which are fine for a couple of hours but then begin to make their presence known by getting sore and uncomfortable, to the extent that if removed, the flesh is too sore for them to be inserted again anytime soon. The expanding foam ones are fine but obliterate most noise, and I like to hear the birds. Ear defenders are ok but in warm weather I find them hot and sweaty ( but if you're using them on the foreshore in season then they should help keep you warm) so have recently had my ears fitted with those bespoke moulded types, again with the valve in them but as they're moulded to my actual ears there should be no discomfort. Cost was 95 quid. Looked at the CENS electronic jobbies, but at 400+ quid too pricey for me.

Thanks for the replies You can hear most stuff just not the sound of the wings and when you blow a call it always sounds wrong. The only way for you to go then is electronic (which don't like water) or further progressive hearing loss

fenboy
I brought some howard leights from off here, they are fairly compact , like ayano3 I should have had some sooner as I too get tinnitus , the only downside to the electronic ones I have found is they amplify everything , wind noise , flys , dogs panting etc,etc , I would still rather listen to those than go deaf though
Terry P
Checked out the howards, I cannot find out if they are waterproof or not either, any ideas chaps.
ayano3
If you are getting them for the marsh I wouldn't bother, you won't get a shot anyway.
Charlie R
I used some debenture ones last season. They lasted a couple of days before the speakers packed up and I reverted to disposable ear plugs from selco. In the past I have used cheaper non slim versions and they are terrible. As you mount the gun the stock would clunk against the ear defender not ideal.

I don't think any will have the rating you need to get a decent life out of such things on the marsh (submersible). I have even ruined car keys in a special so called waterproof case

Do something Terry because it will likely hit you in a few years nobody likes plugs but do you honestly prefer mis hearing people and saying Pardon a lot? Telephone conversations are the worst coz you cant lip read
