turbo33
The 20g went into the gunsmiths yesterday to have a dodgy lower ejector seen too. So that left me with the choice of......the 12g cannon....or the 410 husher The dog hadn't had a reasonable session for a while, so I thought I'd take the 12g, and some home loads, and try to catch some on the flight over the wood. I drove into the middle of a large field of stubble and let the spaniel blow of some steam, in 200 yard circles, whilst I watched for any flightlines to develop. I saw a few following the same lines and had half an idea where they were going. I drove to the other end of the village and to a field I shot a couple of weeks ago with the 410 husher. Half were dropping in close to the hedge and houses, whilst the rest were making their way over the field and onward. At this point, I cursed myself for not bringing the husher. Still, I picked a spot sufficiently far enough away from the houses and popped a hide up and some decoys. I then put the truck 150 yards behind me on the hedgeline to hopefully dissuade them from feeding there. I sat on the tailgate of the truck with the dog, just watching the setup to see if the plan was going to work. Within minutes 3 birds had dropped into the decoys, so mind made up, Jack and I settled in for a few hours. It wasn't long before the first customer arrived and that was cleanly dropped. Today was more about given the dog an outing, as shooting has been really quiet down here. So as keen as mustard, Jack whipped it back to the hide. The birds decoyed well to my plastic deeks, and so didn't bother setting up the dead birds. It all stopped around 4pm, so we packed up. Ended with 33 birds, non lost, and a blooming spaniel who retrieved everyone, and is still "up for it" as I'm typing this!! I've only ever managed to make him tired twice!! One of those was shooting with Bluebarrels over laid wheat with a ripe rape field behind us. The dog picked for both of us, and he actually slept that evening The hide Inside the hide I've marked it so can I go and get it Marked that one too, same question The bag......and the unusually stationary spaniel
