viking
Just wondering what everyone's average bag was whilst pigeon shooting, and what part of the country your in.. I'll start off. Mines a very very poor 2-3 over a year that's in Leeds. Don't know why I bother some times, over the last couple of years it been like this all the time. Cheers, lee
Wilts#Dave
How many farms/acres do you shoot over and what is the cropping like?? The cropping makes a massive difference in my opinion, for example pretty much every farmer in my area have ceased to grow beans anymore which always brought some good 'late' stubble shooting and therefore I've noticed a big drop off at the end of harvest time. I'm guessing you can't be finding many fields with good numbers/flightlines to be averaging 2 or 3 per outing? I'm in wiltshire, we tend to average around the 50 mark through the summer with a few 100+ days and some disappointing ones to go with it! So much also depends on the amount of time you spend looking for pigeons/flightlines. The number of people that have told me 'there's no pigeons about is there' when I've been shooting good bags, but they expect to see fields blue with pigeons and be able to just set up and start shooting with no reconnaissance whatsoever..... fenboy
I would guess mine this year would be somewhere between 40-50 , my best bag this year was 137 .
viking
Only problem is my permission is 30 mile away so don't get much chance to any decent recon, especially working 12 hour days, Crops are wheat, barley, rape, peas in the pod, and potatoes, when I first started there there were plenty of pigeons about, last 2 years hardly nothing, spend most Saturday's just looking/watching/driving about. None on the fields or in the air really, Not a massive farm, probably 20 large fields over the stretch of a mile either side of a minor road, Iv even tried paying for pigeon shooting but that's even been pretty poor too. lakeside1000
I'm out on the coast of Norfolk, I would think my average is around 18 to 20 over the year, harvest time and seed sowing will get me bags of 30 to 40, but quiet times reduce to 5 or 6 if i'm lucky, best this year is 44 on stubble with a 38 and a 33 on the same area over three weeks, Ive been out this afternoon for a reccy and there are hundreds out on the old stubble so im up early in the morning to have a go, fingers crossed for an above average bag. Cheers, lee I admire your determination if your average bag is 2-3. However you must be doing something wrong. I appreciate that you cannot spend much time in advance watching but you shouldn't set up at all until you see a flight line. Spend the time you would have been in the hide driving round looking elsewhere. You may be surprised to find other flocks feeding nearby. Cosd
Do you have exclusive shooting rights to the land? It could be that others shoot there, they do the reccy and shoot when numbers are good. If you're turning up after the fields have been shot hard then it's likely to be quiet. Iv not set up the last 5 or 6 times Iv been, Iv just been driving about looking and sat with the binos. Just never really see any..I do some times see them elsewhere near my permission but can't get on to shoot them.. Do you have exclusive shooting rights to the land? viking
To the above post. My farmer will let any one shoot his land. For the first 3-4 years I never saw anyone else there, now the odd time I do, I guess someone could be shooting there during the week, hard to say.
