Rimfireboy
So what's available off the shelf? I've had a look at a few local dealers and only come up with the Hornady v-max. I was wondering if this is the usual or do some dealers offer a varied selection. I don't want to get a .22 hornet and find that it doesn't like Hornady v-max or I'll be left with a gun that's not going to get used. Or does hornet ownership mean you've got to go down the home loading route? Thanks for any input here.
Underdog
When I started yonks ago and got my first hornet I got rws and s&b ammo and it was good. After that I reloaded but was not really much better off. Setting up will cost but from then on in it is cheap to load hornet. Many cheap components can be used! U. wymberley
There's Winchester and Federal and no doubt more. Not mentioned Remington as they've had a recall of certain Lots and I know not which. I would avoid the one you've pictured/mentioned as short range it's OK but extend it and the ballistics are house brick in nature. Having said that, look at the MVs on offer for the more common 45 gr bullet and by home loading with the use (usually) of LilGun powder this can be increased to some 2900, so, yep, apart from cost, DIY is a good option. steve_b_wales
I bought Hornady at first, but then started to reload my own.It works out at approx 27p per round, not including buying cases. I had a load of cases given me when I bought the rifle. I use Lil'Gun powder.I also had the dies included in the sale,so no outlay apart from the powder, primers(small pistol) and bullets. scobydog
I use privi in my hornet, works fine and not too expensive from simply ammo in Oldham Lancs, not home loaded yet but may start soon. S
Underdog
From what I have seen of the Privi it is good ammo. U.
steve_b_wales
Never knew that prvi did 22 Hornet. Reloading though,is simple.
chris31
I have a .22 hornet, it's one of my favourite rifles I've had, use it all the time, iv never shot anything other than hornady 35grain ballistic tips out of it and get very good results. Just my opinion of course, I'm sure home loading works excellent too.
Rimfireboy
I think that, if I can get prvi locally and it worked well, then that would be good, if it's as cheap as .223 prvi anyway. It's just that I would have liked to have more choice of factory loads available locally. As yet, I've only come across the Hornadys so it got me thinking, am I going to be struggling to get ammo other than Hornady? Thanks for your replies fellas. scobydog
Last visit I paid £23.95 per 50, also got a good deal on some 270 ammo, the guy who runs it seems a good bloke and shoots a lot himself so knows his stuff. S
Vince Green
I love Privi and S+B, always use them if I can get them but its not easy. The dealers don't like them because they don't make as much profit on them as some of the other brands.

wymberley
What I can't understand - other than a decision on the part of the manufacturers that the potential sales volume renders change economically not viable - is why the makers haven't kept pace with the technology. I think that probably the two fastest factory rounds are the Winchester and the Federal at c2700, whereas many others are c2400+ for the more usual 45 grainers. While being perfectly sensible, it is quite straight-forward to re-load to c2900. Yep, OK some will say that an extra 200ft/sec is neither here nor there, but surely some c500 is a little different.
