Westley
Trust me Guys you do NOT want to suffer deafness. Put up with a bit of wind noise through those defenders. Try wearing passive ear defence and holding a conversation in a noisy clubhouse, then imagine spending the rest of your life like that. You CAN NOT get it back ! Highlandladdie
My theory.. Imagine how annoying it is wearing ear defenders on a duck flight and not hearing anything? Then imagine not hearing anything 24/7.. I wear ear defenders all the time and don't mind missing a few birds as a result Not a bad way to look at it
bigmcg
I always wear hearing protection for all shooting. You will always get another crack at a bird, you only get one set of ears!

GADWALL41
As I said , my hearing is Knackered and its just a matter of hanging onto what I have left . One thing I just thought of last night ( and it has happened to me) and should be of particular note to younger Forum readers . If applying for or changing jobs . Some application forms ask about a medical history and specifically if you have difficulty answering the phone etc. Then add in a Medical and possible Audiology - hearing Test ( and don't think you will be able to Bluff it , you wont ) and Your dream Job goes up the Barrel in smoke , so to speak !. After that , you find yourself filling out forms , with Little "WHITE" lies etc , you get the gist . While I was in the ARMY , WE DIDNT HAVE EAR DEFENDERS , we used to use the patches we had to cover the target Holes rolled up in our ears . Believe me after a day of firing FN- SLR 7.62s , your head was spinning , buzzing and Ringing . So my hearing was damaged very early on , 17 in fact . So EVERY DAY , EVERY HOUR , EVERY MINUETE , EVERY SECOND , YOU KNOW WHAT I MISS? SILENCE ! . I haven't known silence in over 40 yrs . I miss the sound of the SLOB to , the WOOSH as a flock of Golden Plover zoom by overhead, the August Curlew call that Stirrs the heart and pumps the blood , makes you get out your decoy bag and clean up ready for the season . These sounds you can play at home on your pc , not the same , but at least you can hear them !. I would lay a bet that most guys who shoot and think they have no hearing loss , do in fact have a substantial loss . Next time your are having a cuppa or a pint with your shooting buddies , see which ones are tilling their heads with the right ear facing the conversation . A DEAD GIVE AWAY . I never ever let my son fire a gun - rifle without hearing protection and I wish I knew then what I know Now , TOO LATE FOR ME , DONT LET IT BE TOO LATE FOR YOU . 7daysinaweek
i started using plugs about 7 years ago but have now moved over to using full ear defenders as they also give protection to the mastoid process which plugs do not, the mastoid process plays a part in the hearing process. wish i had started using them 20 years ago
nic
I had to have annual hearing tests with my job, due to riding motorcycles as part of the job........ the specialist they had in one time looked at the result and said " how long in the army shooting full bore?"... then explained he could tell by the area of hearing loss wether you had shot full bore or shotgun. I have a bit of loss due to explosives and rifles and machinery, but now always wear ear protection (good quality digital kit )....I think I often hear more wing beats and bird sounds than i did before ! welshwizard
Wildfowling was the only time I don't wear them , lets be honest where I shot on the estuary I was lucky to get 2 or 3 shots off once a month at fowl , this was when I was fowling at least once a week ! Conditions are usually that bad that the rain ,wind and sleet/snow you didn't hear the shot as wind carried it away from you , different matter on clays though , was shooting at a ground last weekend and took mine off to talk and another shooter fired under the shelter - I soon had them back on !
