One eye or two?

OK, so I am pretty new to clay shooting and I am plagued with this question - I just can't decide which is best. I am not disciplined enough to do a whole 70 bird shoot with left eye closed and then compare to both eyes open on another 70 bird shoot. So, I find myself sometimes using one eye and sometimes using both.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Which ever style suits you is the one to use . Or if you like one eye open and one half closed .

The argument has been going on for over 100 years so what ever is said here will only repeat the argument .

Some will say you can not shoot with one eye closed , to that the answer is that many one eyed men will disagree .

Doing the eye dominance tests, I appear to be left eye dominant - but I shoot right handed. I couldn't imagine shooting left handed lol.

If I keep both eyes open and point to something with my right hand. If I look at my pointing finger, things behind it are in double vision!!

Kyska - I fear I have the same issue here!

I've 'heard' it's not too hard to learn to shoot left handed, but it matters not to me as I don't have any depth of field, apparently, I'll never know, but I live in a '2D' world.

Obviously I compensate, I know a cow in a field is a long way away and not just very small, and I don't tend to walk into things😄

or learn to shoot left handed.

So why not?

It's easy especially if you are new to shooting

I did it!

If you are left eye dominant, shooting right handed try 3 things walk round the house for a day left eye closed, play catch (or similar) left eye closed, play a round of darts left eye closed.

Absolutely, my personal issue is I don't have binocular vision, regardless if I shoot left or right handed, if I shoot with one eye shut, it's the same as me shooting with my left eye if that makes sense.

But yes, to a new gun, why not.

Does sound a bit different I don't loose depth of field when I close one eye though its easy to walk a mile in someone else's shoes but you can see a day through their eyes.

Nice analogy!

But to explain, you do, you can't have binocular vision with one eye, and depth perception is supported by this.

For example, I don't see the 3D bits in films, I failed my police A2B driving eye test when I was a special, I guess it would take you to drive, or range find with one eye shut, I don't know.

Obviously it's not the same as having one eye.

Thanks for the input guys. Just been watching some YouTube videos and have put a piece of tape (vertically) in the middle of the left lens of my safety glasses. I put the gun up as I would for shooting, both eyes open and didn't have double vision at all. Had peripheral vision and think the right eye is now forced to dominate - will give this a try next Sunday and see how it goes.

I've been shooting properly since the summer, when I got my license, and I tend to shoot skeet with a mix of one or two eyes, depending on the clay.

I started off with my left eye closed - as I shot more accurately with it.

But now I've been trying to learn both eyes open, with a small translucent sticker on my glasses covering part of the left eye, which was my instructor's tip. I've found it's incredibly useful on peg 2 and 3, where I struggled to see the clay in time with my left-eye closed.

Yet it's still a little difficult on 1 and 7 with both eyes open at the moment (with left-eye closed, no problem - get them most of the time).

Some of the folk at the club shoot with one eye closed, others with one eye open. I'm guessing you'll discover what works for you with a bit of time!

The tape works for some not for me I must go and see a proper optician/ophthalmist as I may have similar to kyska (3d films don't work properly for me all the time do part of the time though.

Yes, it's not great - if the glasses are a little out of place, then so is the tape. They did have a much larger clip-on patch that I could try out, though I've not tried it yet.

On some stands I tend to find it easier with my left eye shut other stands I can shoot both eyes open. It's working for me at the min so ill leave it be. But I found with the tape. I used scorch tape and only enough just to cover the bead and a bit spare just in case on mismounting etc.

good luck in which ever way you choose
