I had my first proper outing last night with a home build based on this thread and was well chuffed, I watched one fox come in from over 200 yards clear as day and bowled it over at 90. It had no idea I was there and with the scope set at 8 mag was the easiest shot ever using night vision, I been used to the n550 x4.5 mag. I got it on an old tasco 4-16x40 scope and am so happy with the clarity and viewing range I won't be changing it. It not quite finished as the first battery I ordered didn't work and got sent back so now got it hooked up to my deben lithium whilst waiting for a proper battery from spycamera people (lesson learned there!)oh yeah, I use mine with a nm 800 and after 5 min tweaking and adjusting things to get it right I was away. Cost me under £130 all told. Well happy!!

Quick Q...I've got all the kit as described in early posts ready to build on the weekend:)! Only worry I've got now is how it will perform on my Leupold 3-9x50 scope:-/?! Any ideas?

Probably not very well I'm afraid, all the reports I've read say leupold and other higher end scopes don't transmit IR at all well. The best ones tend to be budget and older scopes that don't have IR blocking lens coatings.

If you are stuck I do have a spare 4-12 x 50 Dowling and Rowe scope going that I used when I had an add on. It was superb for nv, much better than my Nikon, but it obviously means you have to use it during the day too.

Also MTC scopes are supposed to work well so look at those.

If anyone is interested on just having a play on a budget then I've bought these and they work fine. Not tested the torch at any range, I'll give it a go this weekend, I can't image it'll be great but for the price it'll still be useful if only for testing purposes. I'll try and get a short video up.

FPV Mini Vedio Camera HD 700TVL for Aerial Photography Flight Camcorder 271704262996 £3.99 +£1.59

4.3" TFT LCD Car Monitor Reverse Rearview Color Camera DVD VCR CCTV BT 111295540386 £9.11

502B 800LM 3 Core 5W 940NM Red Infrared Night Vision LED Flashlight 161338940607 £6.41

So a grand total of £21.10.

Torch does not come with a battery, but I've got loads of them!

Screen turned up following week of the order and it took just under 3 weeks for the other two. Running off a 9v 1A supply for now.

oh please !!!!! don't waste your money,,if you want to build a homebuild NV then the minimum camera if you have any sense would be ,,,,oh forget it ,,its pretty obvious some people don't listen,

atb Evo

The camera could actually work well out to 80-100 yards (even if, as I suspect, it isn't a CCD but a CMOS sensor) it is the illuminator that will let it down. A good T20 will make it useable if the it filter is removed from the sensor.

Sorry, not being pedantic but do you mean the IR filter? If not what is a IT filter? Where is it? The camera does work well with IR as it is. I built several different versions in the past but this is about £10 cheaper than the last one

I have to make it clear that I was only suggesting that this is an option for anyone that wants to have a play but doesn't want to spend the money on something they are either not confident with or have little use for. I like to mess with stuff but have no real use for NV. For around £30 I'll have something that will give me an idea of what it is all about. If I want to move on then I'll spend the money but as it is it'll probably just sit in a draw while I move onto my next project. My last one was a chronograph that could measure up to about 19000FPS with built in temperature, humidity, pressure, a compass and GPS. Really useful

At worst, you 'may' have to spend another 30-40 pounds but you will still have night vision good for 80+ yards.for £60 ish.

Air gun shooters will be queuing at your door to give you your money back for it and you have 'had a play and learned for yourself.

I do however bow to all the excellent info to be gained from reading the multitude of posts freely given by very knowledgable lads on here and other forums.

Sorry, auto-correct on my phone didn't like IR so changed it to IT.

If you haven't removed the IR filter from the front of any sensors before then you will be blown away when you do remove it. It is the glass square that sits directly on the sensor. Use a scalpel to work all the way round loostening the glue and then gently lift it off. It'll make a huge difference.

Cheers for that, really useful stuff.

I've quickly bodged the bits together and created a very poor video of how it is out of the box. My apologies but I was trying to do three things at once in the dark!

first shows screen powered no IR and a view outside. IR torch shines on camera then a view down the garden, roughly 20 yards to the fence. click off the torch then another view down the garden. Screen image is better than the video. I think my camera was struggling to focus.

Was out last night with the NV,have mixed results with the view finder, rabbits 50 Mtrs out look like they are sitting on the moderator, but because the finder has a 3x diopter the screen appears grainy as it magnifies the pixels.Going to take it into a camera shop and see if they can put maybe a 1x in or just something that allowas me to view the cross hairs without the need for glasses.

Anyhow shooting went well untill the 4x4 got stuck(useless 50/50 tyres) ended in one ripped off wing mirror and a ripped of rear tail light and one well and truly stuck motor wedged up against a tree.Well back down today with the chainsaw lol.
