Fisherman Mike
Well I've fixed the tailgate solenoid and lock, plus changed the brake light switch which has cured the EPC light problem but when accessing the rear of the car I noticed that the rear passenger footwell (drivers side) was absolutely full up with water and the carpet and underlay are sopping wet. I also noticed after some heavy rain that there was a trickle of water on the rubber mat on the drivers side. so it might be that the water is ingressing at the front and as he parks on a slope is running to the back under the carpet. The car is a 2 door model..all the door seals seam to be in good condition. Any ideas where this water might be coming from and how do I find out... Would it be windscreen ? or the well in front of the screen which houses the wipers ? All help appreciated as normal. Thanks Mike
MartynGT4
Might be worth googling Seat Leon door leaks as its essentially the same car and lots of people had problems with leaks, including mine. Causes included poorly fitted pollen filters, leaking door panel seals, blocked door drain holes and worn door seals. P.S. when you'ved solved the leak, use a vax to get most of the water out, then buy a few kilos of silica gel off ebay to leave in the car for a few days to really dry it out. Any damp smells can be removed by sprinkling a tub of bicarbonate of soda on the carpets and leaving it there overnight, sounds odd but it worked a treat! silver pigeon69
run a hose over the car and see if you can see any leaks inside. Open the drivers door and move it backwards and forwards quickly and listen for any water sloshing about in the bottom of the door. If theres no water in the doors, i would check the door seals and the scuttle panel drain(under windscreen)
kennett
Not the same car I know but my wife's old megane had water in front footwells due to a blocked scuttle under the windscreen. Poked mig wire down the drain holes until it all cleared then poured a few kettles of boiling water down to clean it out
neil82
last golf I worked on with a water leak was blocked scuttle drains (they are on the sides on these and drain into the inner wings), water was pouring in through a plastic housing above the peddles, cleared all the leaves and crud out, took the plastic box off and sealed it with silicone, if its got a/c and its working leave it on all the time, that should dry it out if left on recirc
Fisherman Mike
Thanks guys..Ive had the lad spray the hose on it from all sides and all angles...the door seals are all fine as are the door drains. However water was absolutely pouring in from an area above the drivers footwell. I couldn't see where it was coming from but it was high up forward of the windscreen and in the well which the wiper gear is situated. The water was running down the brake pedal in the main. and the brake switch had some water in it which is why it was probably shorting and setting off the EPC light. There appears to be some sort of plastic box in this well any idea what this might be.? If its not the drains blocked I shall be stripping out the wiper gear and sealing this well up.. Is it best to use something like flash band or a brush applied waterproofing compound. ? thanks again Edited January 4, 2015 by Fisherman Mike
neil82
guaranteed its the drains blocked, clean them out, remove the plastic housing and give it a good clean then seal it with silicone or bond it with gripfill
silver pigeon69
guaranteed its the drains blocked, clean them out, remove the plastic housing and give it a good clean then seal it with silicone or bond it with gripfill +1 but not with Gripfill, use silicone. But unblock the drain first, probably find this sorts the problem and no need to seal it. Edited January 4, 2015 by silver pigeon69
Paddy Galore!
the rain scuttle caused problems for me in the caddy, three parts, there's a long thin seal that slots over the edge of the scuttle and sticks to the windscreen. the other problem was that the tray was jacobed, letting water run back into the pollen filter and out through the vent holes. shaun4860
On an old escort of mine it was coming in through the bottom of the fusebox which was under the bonnet rather than inside the car, Scuttle would be favourite in this case though
Paddy Galore!
although I seem to remember the rubber bungs in the firewall on a sirocco being perished and falling out many moons ago. as has been suggested, get the hose out and test
Fuddster
another vote for the vents below the scuttle-my old golf flooded due to blocked drains-bit of a poke and flush and load of mush came out-no problem after that.looked like rotted leaves etc f
bazzab
The mk4 has terrible issues with water getting in under the pollen filter. Which is exactly where you have described. It also leads to issues with the EPC like you have found. Possibly a lose the sunroof drains blocked. Have a read of this. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=88604.
Fisherman Mike
Cheers all I hope I have cured the problem. I removed the wipers, scuttle...(not before damaging it ! ) followed by the wiper linkage There was a serious amount of crud blocking the drain pollen filter end but nothing much drivers side. I used a hose to clean out the drains, and then filled the scuttle with water to finally ensure it was coming in through the wiring loom entry box, which it was. I cleaned the rest of the water out of the well with the vax and dried it all off with a hot air gun. I then removed the two plastic nuts securing the wiring loom housing cover and cleaned all around with meths. I made a new gasket with a bead of rubberised gutter sealant let it get tacky and fixed it back on. Whilst at it and to be doubly sure ,I ran bead all round the perimeter of the cover and smoothed it to the panel with my finger to form a complete seal. The pollen filter housing seemed ok with no water coming in the vents so I didn't do anything with this. I gave all the inside of the well including linkages and wiring looms etc. a good coat of silicone water repellent spray. Finally cut and bonded some aluminium fly screen to the perforations in the scuttle to stop leaves and seeds etc finding their way into the well and blocking the drains again. Hopefully thats done the trick if not I will probably take of my clothes and walk into the sea.! One last question.. What gets this black rubberised gutter sealant off my hands. !? neil82
angle grinder with a wire wheel fitted, next time (although there shouldn't be a next time if you`ve fitted mesh) use disposable gloves (available at most garages, next to the diesel pumps)
