Getting tired!

Contemplating all the time!

Contemplating down sizing.

Often wonder about selling the 357 and getting a 22 mag.

I could sell the reloading stuff.

It would be a bit safer and just as flat.

I enjoy my frontstuffers more nowadays.

Getting tired of cf rifles.

Any thoughts?

There use to be one or two 22 mag users on here!

Can you still get the standard ammo of old?

Thanks.

Or man up and keep plodding on. You ain't that old, wait till grandalf sees this he's a little more senior than yourself and he's wildfowling every day lol

Lol, its not that mate. My land has changed! I am now operating in a much more busy area!

Those nuggets like keeping together!!

Not so much a need to man up or an age thing, more of a responsible attitude! Maybe!

Yep, I have one, I have no problem getting ammo, such a fantastic underrated round, either my CZ is just a good gun, or the accuracy issues some talk about are nonsense.

I much prefer it to my hmr.

I see your point UD but wont you miss it, and cant you see yourself getting permission that is more suitable ???.

Its something i don't like to think of very often at all, getting rid of one because of this that or the other,or until i actually need to due to legal reasons ie; no use for a certain caliber. I keep thinking of swapping my HMR, but then when i do actually take it out it changes my mind, its such a sweet little round.

Glad your keeping the front stuffers :good:

Good point mate but I don't miss the stalking of deer!

I put so much effort into hunting foxes over 25years plus it is getting a bit pointless!

I was chuffed to get one with the flinter the other week yes but all Christmas I carried that 357 hunting yet more fox. I passed on such a lot of small game shots!

It would be easier to stop those .224"!

My days of sucking up to keepers are long gone as well!

A few friendly farmers are enough now.

What realistic distance do you get mate and with what ammo please?

I always remember a friend pushing his to 175 with a lot of hld over! I remember 2-3" over 100 of trajector , is that about right?

I'm 67 and try to be out shooting most day's, I don't hit as much as I used to and sometimes it annoys me - but I keep at it, as it's what I've done all my life and I live for shooting.

I have also been in the same driven syndicate for 28 years, a lot of the original members now have long gone and have been replaced by a young team. Being the oldest gun I get a lot of leg pulling etc - but I enjoy this!

I have a number of health issues but would never dream of retiring and will keep going for as long as I can.

Depends on bullet weight, but it's not hard to compensate, bit like a .22 lr, one thing is the terminal product is nothing like HMR, they certainly give you the confidence of a pulled shot, with a 100ft/lb over the .17, they make a definitive difference.

40g is the winner with me.

Had a Ruger M77 in .22 Mag for years. The rotary mag' is a great invention and I'm surprised it isn't used more; first used on the Garand possibly? Anyhow, very underestimated round and great fun. The advent of the HMR threatened to all but kill it off, and did so for a while (values dropped like a stone) but they never really went away and seem to be making a steady return. More of a soft boom rather than a HMR crack, and when they hit, well..... it's impressive anyhow. Tried the 33(?)grainers but my rifle didn't like them so went back to the 40's. Good round and good fun.

I had a .22 wmr for years as a close range fox rifle . Also had a HMR for a while but unless it was a perfect day / night it was rubbish imo so it went . Out of the two ..... the .22 wmr every time . Still lots of ammo and readily available too . It will thump a fox out to 100 yrds for sure .as within 100 yrds will have better terminal ballistics than the HMR . I also used it for thinning out hares as and when needed out to 150 yrds with fantastic results . And last but not least it doesn't get knocked about by the wind as much as the HMR .

Thanks gents.

I just picked the brains of my old friend that shot one for years and he confirms everything said here!

I remember some amazing shots with it including running rabbits!

His longest fox was 140yards between the eyes with about 4" of hold over.

Have done a deal with the dealer and may call in Monday, straight swap.

I do think that since losing some prime land and forestry my 357 is too heavy for around here, horses, walkers and bouncing nuggets don't mix.

I need to be realistic!

Underdog...Grandalf here.

Thank god Dougy got it wrong and you're not packing up due age or infirmity.

Changing the weapons, downsizing if you like, is all part of the keeping active with age process.

Got rid of my ten bore...changed the choke on my twelve to compensate.

Still got the 22/250 with all the NV carp attached to it but only use it off the truck now because of the weight.

Purchased a light Remington 700 .243 for walking about.

It is just adapting to your loss in strength and stamina.

But never give up...That's not an option.

Thanks Gents.

Dougy, you got nothing wrong bud.

In my early twenties I got onto one of Staffordshire's most wonderful estates and under one of the best keepers around these parts, he looked after me so I looked after his birds.

My reputation went before me and was soon on other estates. Local fox hunts hated my guts!

Did a few years stalking deer but as much as I love Scotland the traveling and feeling tired for a weekend got boring! The hinds on the hill was good but no way was I wanting it all the time!

I started on small game with air rifle at 12years and now enjoy small game only again, easy to carry and easy to prepare!

That old keeper, he always said they (fox's)always have the last laugh!

Another old keeper friend end his career at 75 this February. I won't be partaking in any more driven pheasant shoots anymore myself!

Cheers.
