fenboy
For peas to start chitting , I am waiting on 7 fields of peas to start showing themselves , some have been in two weeks and still no sign ! Also 5 fields of mustard , which I really thought would be up by now, but again nothing , which all means no pigeon to be found on my drive round today, so looks like another week of jobs around the house

la bala
Yes I think your right . Dont know the ground temperature for peas, but an old fen farmer told me, you dont drill beet until you can drop your kecks, squat down and the soil dont feel cold to your bits. One of my colleagues is from over the border in lincolnshire and tells me " you don't want to drill the beet untill you can sit barearse on the land" We don't grow beet so it was abit pointless really

JDog
There are some very odd traditions on the East side of the country I see. Surely there must be more modern farming methods.

ShropshireSam
Peas will germinate in cold soils but they will be slow to emerge. Had some fields drilled with peas last week but do not expect them to emerge for another fortnight unless it warms up a bit quicker.
