ditchman
got the pumpdrive and the camshaft out today......if you remember there was oil in the vacumn pump when i took it apart....now you can see why...the seal disintergrated.....to old type of seals are made from plastic...the new type are "rolled" o rings...... ditchman
this is where the seal sits.......and this is where the pumpdrive meshes with the camshaft...........
sandspider
How will you get it all back together?! I can take things apart, but reassembly is sometimes another matter!
ditchman
How will you get it all back together?! I can take things apart, but reassembly is sometimes another matter! it looks complicated................but there are only a few parts really...........most things only go/fit the right way round.........if you see something laid out and clean...with only a bit of practice...everybody can do this......... ditchman
getting close to assembling it now........just look at the thickness of the metal on the side plates..!!...ive seen thinner metal on the side plates on the valve chest of a Fowler steam engine......... next pic is of the bits i need/took off all wrapped up and marked ...as my memory can be rubbish sometimes....gone are the days when i threw everything in a bucket of desiel !! ditchman
i needed to replace the toe/spigot bush from the crank...there are various ways...including filling it with grease blanking a socket off an smacking it with an 'ammer...i prefere making a small very sharp chisel out of an old drill...and gently cut out a wedge...then collapse it in on itself...its only a copper alloy so it is quite soft...then stick your finger in and lift it out........... ditchman
Before i put the camshaft back i thought i would explain "THE RULE OF 9"...when used when the engine is timed and ready for the tappet clearance to be done........... the first pic' is the camshaft all marked up...12345678 valve lobes...and 3 B's which stands for the bearings... the next 7 pics are.... cam lobe up...#1 valve down... #8 lobe "back of the cam"........ADJUST VALVE TAPPET #8....1+8=9 cam lobe up...#2 valve down... #7 lobe down.."back of the cam"..ADJUST VALVE TAPPET #7...2+7=9 cam lobe up...#3 valve down.. #6 lobe "back of the cam"........ADJUST VALVE TAPPET #6.......3+6=9 cam lobe up...#4 valve down......#5 lobe "back of the cam"....,,ADJUST VALVE TAPPET #5....5+4=9 then you start from the other end..............piston 1 and valve 1 are always at the front of the engine..(the opposite end from the clutch)
