to polish and harden lead shot

Do you really have to get used to a cartridge?

Yes I believe you do.

It may be a confidence thing or it may not. Timing is everything and if there is even the slightest difference between cartridges it will soon be shown up.

Before I moved from the Cotswolds I had a shooting buddy who was a pretty good shot. However he would insist on using any old cartridges and when he had a mixture in his bag it certainly showed.

Maybe I'm strange, but I seem to get on ok with whatever I put in the gun.

loading a batch of cartridges is a very tricky thing to try to repeat my first is to drop in 1 ton of shot then for sake is on 32 gram 31250 we then make sure the powder is the same lot and shoot every 5000 6 to ten carts for look and see now alough u may have a powder called say abc that does not mean that the next ton using say abc again but a different lot number is going to produce the same carts as lot one they are a lot of various things so if I get say a batch of 5 ton all called abc but the powder factory only make 4 ton batches there is 1 ton in there I will have to work loads up for so do not take it for granted that 1 name of powder is the same as the previous batch so now I go to ballistics and try and put out my carts to 400 meters per sec at 2.5 and pressure around 580 to 620 bar so buy as many as you can afford in the same batch number thanks george

George 5 ton of powder @ 1.3 g per cartridge = 1.3kg per 1000

5000 kg of powder = 3846 x1000= 3,846153 cartridges 15384 slabs that's 12307 slabs per 4 ton that's a lot of pigeons or clays for every 4 ton of powder you need 98 ton of lead should keep us going for a bit

  • 2 weeks later...

If you shoot 2 registered 100 bird shoots or 4 50 bird local shoots a month that's 2600 cartridges a year , cheap cartridges are £160 per 1000 ,good ones can be had for £190/£200 per 1000 .That's a deference of £2 a week are you all hard up for £2 a week

My wife and I shoot on average 200 cartridges per week (2×50 each twice per week). I'm in the process of changing from Hull Super fast (£173 per 1000) to Gamebore Velocity (£151 per 1000) which will save £220 per year. If I shot Gamebore Blue Diamond as I used to I would be saving £570 per year. To me cost counts, especially as a recreational shooter for whom the odd missed clay due to cartridge choice is hardly critical. Edited by Glenlivet
