black powder gunner
The gun has a built in spring which is attached to a metal post that swivels which fits into a solid piece of oak sat on the floor of the punt which is tensioned by two rods and springs attached to the bow and bulk head these take the recoil of the gun and it only moves a couple of inches when fired. This reduces muzzle flip but you still get a bit but this you can be used to your advantage. When stalking wildfowl the optimum range for this gun is 55 to 65 metres when using bismuth shot. When I first got the gun my first four shots all missed when shooting at ducks on the water I found it very difficult to judge distance when laid flatt in the bottom of the punt when trying to keep still and paddle when your 6 inch on top of the water with very little horizon to judge distance to solve this problem I got some range finding binoculars which proved a big help. All my best shots have come at about 60 meters with the ducks swimming on the water I take aim and fire the first barrel of by pulling a toggle on the lanyard one toggle is shorter than the other so when I am ready to shoot I very carefully pull the hammers back and put both toggles in between my fingers a swift pull down of the toggle sets the first barrel of followed by the second barrel about a second later. The first shot very rarely kills many ducks because they are a small target when on the water suddenly when the first shot goes of the ducks panic open there wings to take off giving a bigger surface area to shoot at when the second shot goes it rips into the ducks killing many this is when a bit of muzzle flip can help with rising duck. Not made by JR Stockburn by any chance, 2007/8?
