marsh man
Yesterday morning I had the unpleasant experience of being at the dentist for a filling , the pain I could put up with, but what hurt the most was the £51 it cost to put a filling in one of the few remaining teeth I have got left in my mouth . Still I suppose I am lucky to still have a few left to fill . Anyhow I soon got over it, and to get a bit of fresh air I thought I would have a walk round some of my marshes I don't go on very often , well after me mumping last week about not having quite enough water and ( Fal ) saying he have got to much I was surprized to see the amount of water on there after what seem like rain every day for the last week . walking round the rim and seeing the odd duck feather convinced me it was worth going back home , have a cuppa and head back with my gun and a few steel shells. I also had a little moan last week about the shortage of Mallard round this way and it was very kind of ( E w ) to say I ort to move to Wales as he had plenty round his part of the world , I did consider it ( for less time than it took me to write consider ) no I am only joking , I love where I am , I was born two roads away from where I am now and I am pretty sure I will be round here when my time is up . I knew there were 20 or so Mallard using these marshes as I had seen them odd mornings when I have took the dogs up the river , weather any come to the flash I was going to flight , that I don't know but there is only one way in finding out and that is to give it a go . Unlike the boys from the Fens who have a good ole walk over mud and saltings and then crouch in a muddy gutter for a shot or two mine was a nice walk over 3 or 4 grass fields and then had the luxury of a bale of hay been left near the water that I could stand against instead of carting a hide with me. I wont go into all the details but I did see around 20 odd duck , managed to have a few shots , hit some and missed some and the 20 odd ducks have now got 4 less when they have get together , so my passport to Wales have been cancelled and if any one want some water , bring a bucket and help yourself . 6.5x55SE
Well done John. I keep hoping my local River over flows as when it does it leaves some lovely water flashes that attract plenty of Species of Duck. Mind you this Wind and Rain is NOT helping with my Deer Culling
marsh man
Well done John. I keep hoping my local River over flows as when it does it leaves some lovely water flashes that attract plenty of Species of Duck. Mind you this Wind and Rain is NOT helping with my Deer Culling Thanks Boyd...... Saturday and Sunday morning we had a couple of very big tides up which covered the Ronds down the bottom end of the estuary , well below flood level but the duck were down there in the 100s maybe in the low 1000s , now there is no shooting down there the duck seem to know that and you can walk on top of the wall and they are swimming about well in normal shooting distance . I spent a hour inside the bird hide and had Teal , Pintail , Widgeon , Mallard , Shoveler and Little Egrets feeding 20 to 30yds out on the saltings , the only species that wasn't down there were the geese , although I do know where they are and now I have got enough duck for a while I hope to have a goose within the next few days , wind and weather permitting . Good luck on your deer culling .

marsh man
I nice read John. I do like your wit! Morning Paul ..... Enjoyed your posts you spent with the wild boys from across the border , if I didn't live where I am now I would have loved to had been round the wash area , when I say wild boys , they are some of the nicest people I have met on the few times I have gone up there for a day out . Getting a goose on two flights on the trot is down to some straight shooting by you , and the hard work and knowledge of the ( wild boys ) who were kind enough to take you out and don't forget if your near mine at anytime pop in for a chat and a cuppa . Hope your young dog is behaving herself and the training is going well and say hello to your lovely girl friend . A T B. Nice write up, well done. Aled Cheers Aled. anser2
Nothing like a couple of brace of mallard , nice to shoot wigeon or teal , ect , but when it comes to good eating you cant beat a fat mallard. You look like getting your wind for the geese in the morning. It looks as though you are only a mile or two from one of the marshes I shoot on ( just at the end af the left hand beltof trees ). I was thinking about chasing the geese myself in the morning , but I had a look down on my N Norfolk coastal marsh this morning and they seem to have dissapeared ( only saw a hunderd ) so off to the west side of the county after the duck for morning flight ( just hoping the water levels are not too high to wade out to the marsh ). JDog
A clever post Marshman. I would have loved to have seen you attempt to push those soaking round bales together to make a hide.

Tomorrow morning would have ideal but most of my Saturdays are spent on the game shoots , if we get done early I will end up somewhere near mine as this morning there were big numbers of geese drifting about all over the Acle marshes , maybe we have got some of yours from N / Norfolk ? As you say a fat Mallard take some beating and I have just done this one for tomorrow nights tea .
marsh man
A clever post Marshman. I would have loved to have seen you attempt to push those soaking round bales together to make a hide. Thanks Mr JDog .....If I wanted to move the bales I would have got in touch with Ditchman , the mechanical genius to see if he could devise a machine to assist us , how we would have got it down the marsh I don't know , perhaps he have got a amphibious turbo lawn mower in his work shop to help us out .
