kody
So what's the best choking for the little fourteen some say full some say open as its a small calibre bolting rabbits pigeon tree huggers etc ranges up to 30yds
robbiep
You shoot tree huggers ? Damn, I never knew ... In all seriousness, keep the choking tight. Not a lot of shot, even in a 3" cartridges, and too open there will be a lot of holes in the pattern. I would also view 30 yards as absolute extreme range for a 410, even fully choked. More open chokes you really want to start bringing those ranges in.
Stonepark
Like any shotgun, choose your load and choke dependent on game and range. For under 35 yards, biggest pellet you need to kill is a No7 on small and medium game. Full Choke on a 410, nearly always blows the pattern to a greater or lesser extent. On the 410's I have handled, somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 choke has produced the optimum dense pattern with 3 inch ammo. At 30 yards with eley No7 18g, this will give you 165 pellets with 1/4 choke and 178 pellets with half choke at 30yards, more than enough energy to kill at 1.63ftlbs per pellet. For comparison 30g of No6 from a 12 bore at 40 yards will give you 156 and 171 pellets at 1/4 and 1/2 respectively and only 1.55ftlbs and that is considered a perfectly acceptable cartridge/choke by the majority of shooters. welshwarrior
Always found 1/2 choke the best at longer ranges and 30 yards is long with a little 410, 7s would be my choice.
kent
Whatever most of the stuff I shoot is well under 30 or so close no choke could have much effect
bicykillgaz
I've found 1/4 best in a .410, I use to have an anschutz bolt action 1/4 choke which patterned great with fiocchi magnum 19g no6/7.
deershooter
I have been shooting a .410 at skeet,DTL ,Sporting for the last 4 years after extensive testing I too have found out that 1/2 choke is the tightest you will need ,it's best to consider 1/2 choke as the maximum in this little caliber. For skeet I use cylinder cylinder, sporting 1/4-1/4 and DTL 1/2-1/2 I also find 16 gram cartridges better patterning than 18 Deershooter
ChrisAsh
Please with the greatest of respect ignore most of the above advice and make up a pattern sheet if one is not available locally and shoot a few patterns with your regular cartridges and also if possible a few others. its the only way to sort out whats best for your cun and cartridge selection You will also find most 3 inch 19 gram cartriges throw a **** pattern but 14 gram 2.5 inch seem a good comprimise Edited January 2, 2016 by ChrisAsh
rjimmer
On the back of the old 10/- Gun License there were recommendations for ranges of shotguns, but what did those old chaps know about shooting?
bicykillgaz
I agree that 3" cartridges are pointless through tight chokes but open the chokes out and 3" cartridges start coming into their own. I've had some of my best days shooting with fiocchi 19g no6 & no7. Better off buying a few boxes and going and shooting to see how you get on, my personal preference is 1/4 choke with any cartridge.
