Benthejockey
how short can I make my knackered old Belgian single shot 410 then? Does it have to be 40in oal or just a 24in barrel and I can chop barrel to 24ins and the wood to a pistol grip to make it a handy oddity? grrclark
Ben, so long as it is not a semi or pump then 24" barrel and however little you need to hold on to. Assuming you are within GB of course. It is a silly inconsistency in the law that differentiates between semi/pump and other guns, but the law being silly is no surprise. Benthejockey
Nope knackered old Belgian single shot hammer gun 410. It sounds daft as surely a 410 pistol isn't much shorter than that?

Assuming you are within GB of course. It is a silly inconsistency in the law that differentiates between semi/pump and other guns, but the law being silly is no surprise. I believe that the inconsistency arises because of the necessary length of the receiver in pumps and autos, when the ill-conceived laws were made, these guns were deemed more dangerous (by the law makers) than the traditional single and doubles (with relatively short mechanical actions) possessed in their millions by the hoy-polloy and ruling classes. (Not my view I assure you) The 40 inch overall length, if applied to a single or double would create a gun with a stupid barrel length or stock which the powers that be and their lobbying cohorts would not accept. In my humble opinion a single barrel Baikal is just as dangerous, or not, as a box fed semi auto with 14 rounds loaded and 3mags on the belt. As is the wont of shooters to find a way round it, the law gave rise to the long barrelled smooth bore revolvers which I feel are simply a statement of the stupidity of a law, made by faceless rulers who do not trust the electorate and who never will
walshie
You'd be cutting the choke off for a start. And if you make the wrong decision without professional advice, I'm sure the "A bloke on a forum said it was ok" will be a perfectly acceptable defence in court. Underdog
What bloke said on a forum said it would be OK? I have seen law quotes that state quite clearly what is prohibited. The only time an overall length is stated is for pump and autos. All others just barrel length considerations.
TIGHTCHOKE
Gentlemen, firstly my apology, I was wrong. I have tried to contact my FEO who is on leave and due to leave the job. The office put me on to another FEO who has confirmed that a section two shotgun must have a barrel of 24" or longer and that the 40" overall length ONLY applies to Pump Action and Semi-Automatic Shotguns. Live and learn. Edited February 17, 2016 by TIGHTCHOKE
