It never turned up and landed at Bournmouth or Blackpool. that was the only shot I took that day. Just a quick question mate, how do you know the aircraft owner / company when you can only see a white belly at XXXXX thousand feet??? This is how I do it. http://www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/sbs-1.php Its transponder decoder. Gives a Radar Picture on your PC. I have an external aerial so pick up every aircraft in a 200 Miles radius of me. I can post screen shots if you would like to see what it does. My guess is that you are probably not "that" interested

markm
I ain't no plane spotter but I am def interested. Oh and call me thick but could that not be used by terrorists looking to shoot down a plane with an important person on when a plane was coming in to land or taking off? Or does my imagination just run wild with itself (maybe the teenage LSD coming out o storage!!!!)
ShaggyRS6
Well, yes and no. Most important people travel on military transport which do not boradcast "Mode S" which is what this box of tricks is using to decode its position. It still transmits transponder info, but not the info that allows you to plot it. I say most, because some actually do. Now, 2 years ago the CAA and other european agencies made it mandatory for all aircraft that fly in Europe to be equiped to transmit Mode S as a back up to their current equipment. So by 2008 all Aircraft (military or not) will have to use it. This obviously raises a question of terrorism. the argument is weak though. I dont need this equpment to tell when a plane is going to be flying over me, I live in Kent, i see them all day. If I really wanted to blow up an aircraft with a shoulder launched weopan, i simply hide in the undergrowth at the end of the RWY at Gatwick, or many other airports. You dont need a Radar. Any thing over lets say 15000 ft or so is out of reach by this type of weopan. So yeah, as a terorist you could carry one around and plug it into our laptop, its easier however to just sit in the woods around an airfeild and pop an aircraft off. The SBS-1 does not tell you who is on the plane. Only its Speed, heading, Altitude, Flight Number and A/C type. Let me know if you want me to bore you any more. Its not boring, very interesting actually, I am a terrible flyer but I find planes fasinating (don't ask about Balkan Holidays Tupelovs I went skiing to Bulgaria on in Feb last year). So if a terrorist had a leak that Tony Blair etc etc was on a BA Flight from Europe to Gatwick and he had the Flight No he could identify the plane as it was coming into land and blow it up? How much does the gear cost?
ShaggyRS6
Yes he could do that, but to be honest, he is going to have more success with an Air Band radio sitting at the end of the Runway. There is really no way this equipment would be of an advantage unless you were using Vehicle launched SAM's, they come with a built in Radar The SBS-1 costs £499 and comes with an Internal antenna. The external Antenna costs about £70 I will get a load of piccies together for you tonight. FWIW I am a huge avaition fan. I am actually Rated on the 777 and 747 (Real Simulators, from engine start to engine close, down, progaming the Flight Management Computer) etc. I was invited to Boeing for 2 weeks to achive this
