fatchap
Hello chaps, I'd like to pick your brains. My old bandsaw has twice now tried to open an artery or two upon my personage and I've decided it has to go. I think the tensioner has gone, sometimes its fine but then all of a sudden it just goes, the blade flicks out and I have to check all my digits are present. Just dont trust the thing anymore. I have been looking at scroll saws, and wondered how they compare to a bandsaw? I dont cut anything heavy just up to 4mm brass plate and knife scales and sometimes antler. My bandsaw also takes up a lot of bench space. So whats your opinions?
bigman
Band saw all day long buddy , do you rough out blade profiles on it too?
johnphilip
I would say bandsaw to. I have had both. The scroll is ok for thin stuff, but try anything thicker its far harder to get a true cut. And the work piece keeps jumping. what make is your bansaw. Saltings
band saw all day long problems you are having may be down to bearing failure in one of the wheels
fatchap
Its a Burgess B2 its fairly old. I dont use it for profiling the blades, I get as close as I can with a spinner then profile it in with the belt grinder. I work for a plant hire company and I took it in to the workshop as they service small tools and basically they said its had it. All three plastic wheels are worn, the tensioner just needed adjustiing, but as they said with the wheels in the condition they are in the blade is unlikely to stay on especially at high speed which is required for cutting metal. If i let the saw do the work and dont push the work through it may behave itself, but the simple prognosis is its had it. So whats the recommendation for a bandsaw around the 150 jib mark? Bazooka Joe
I've a Bandsaw the same size as your Burgess, it's got the same problem with the plastic wheels, it's about as much use as a kick in the head. I bought one from a school who were selling off all the metalwork machines & have never looked back. kent
I should cut the brass by hand if your only doing a pair at a time Why take up space as a brass cuts and files lovely
