saddler
Doubt it "started" life as a 7.62.... Are the military proof marks British or American? The letter the serial no. starts with is the maker: W, R or E (Winchester, Remington or Eddystone) Be interested to know which it is, Pattern 14 or M1917 ETA: Have a few similar smoothbored ex-mil items, but no P14/M1917 (yet) Edited April 29, 2016 by saddler

rovercoupe
Is there any way of using the serial number to find out who made it? I know the american ones have a letter prefix but i was reading about these and i would not mind a boss or purdey or cogswell p14!

Irrespective of original caliber ALL rifles of this pattern were American made. Some were rebuilt after the war by London firms....some worked on during the war for fitting of telescopic sights & for similar tweaks
