FalconFN
I know there are some clever techy folk on here so I need some advice on what to and what not to get.. I need a cheap throw-about work laptop to keep in the car and take abroad. It'll be used for basic image processing and storage until I get to a desktop where the real work is done. New budget laptop processors are probably not up to the job but I've been looking at ex-business laptops with better processors (intel 5i, and 4GB ram) that go for £100-£150. Is this a false economy and are there any technical or compatibility pitfalls that I need to be aware of with used laptops?

So as long as you aren't after the latest and greatest, they're a good way to go.
bruno22rf
I try to buy manufacturer refurbished units now-most Laptops don't seem to last more than a couple of years anyway and you CAN get the same warranty if you shop around-the one I'm using now is 4 years old + however long before it was originally returned and is still going strong. four-wheel-drive
I wanted a new laptop towards the end of last year I ended up buying a new Dell Chrome book nice thing good for surfing the net very quick but it seems to do everything up in the on there servers trying to print anything is a nightmare I think it cost me about £200 I wish that I had got a revurvished IBM Thinkpad could have got a good spec one for that money I use Linux so no worry about getting bugs and I could have stored everything that I needed on the hard drive and printed it off as and when I pleased. FalconFN
Thanks all. Just bought a Dell laptop with 6GB ram, Intel core i5 processor and a months warranty for £100. Should be fine for a year or two!

Nice one mate ,at that price you'll probably get most of your £100 back when you come to sell it .
harrycatcat1
The laptop I have seems to have been around forever, I cant remember when I got it but 2003 rings a bell. Do they come with some marks to say when it was built? Its a Toshiba L300-1BV 15.4" basic all rounder. I have been thinking of buying a new battery for it for the last 5 years as it only works now off the power lead. Regards H

Should be fine for a year or two! Did you buy it from a dealer, or privately? If a dealer, then who please? Thanks, Mike.
FalconFN
It was a dealer on ebay. They seem to have various ex-business laptops in varying conditions, some have 6 months warranty and some have less. You have to read the ads carefully to see what spec they are and what is wrong with them but if you aren't too bothered about cosmetics then they are a bargain - hopefully... grrclark
The best thing that you could do is to get a solid state hard disk drive for it if you have not already done that. It will absolutely transform the performance.
