Suzuki Grand Vitara AT Tyres

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice from PW members on AT tyres for my 2012 GV.

The spec is 225/60 R18

I have asked my local garage to source some and they are struggling to find any viable modles. Only (very) expensive tyres are showing.

From experience, can members recommend any particular make of AT tyres in this size?

Thanks in anticipation.

Yup, as said. When we bought our Shogun a couple of years ago, someone had put a set of 18" wheels on it. It was cheaper for me to buy a set of 16" wheels and new AT tyres than it was to buy AT tyres for the 18" rims. I then sold the 18s.

Thanks for swift replies.

Yes, that would back up the lad at my garage. He did a lot of teeth sucking and head shaking at the tyre size.

Touch wood, I do intend to keep the vehicle for the foreseable, so I think changing to 17s looks a very sensible option, particularly as their is such limited options at 18".

As you lads are obviously very knowledgeable on this, how much should I look to spend on x4 17" new rims?

Cheers

Glad you got sorted.

One question springs to mind.

If the 'original' wheels were 17" what difference to the speedo reading did 18" or now 16" rims make?

Heres a link to help out. https://tiresize.com/speedometer-calibration/

Just curious

Oh and heres a link to quite a few 18" tyres that might have done the trick?

Originals were 18" not 17" I asked my local Suzuki garage for verification

that changing to 16" would not harm anything seriously. They did this and used that same link, so I'm happy.

I'll be furious if you've found AT 18" AT tyres! Thanks for your interest.

No AT tyres in there. I literally looked all over Europe for them. There just isn't any!

Do not know if you can get them for your vehicle/tyre size(17)but I have been running Coopers on my Land Rover for many years and miles and they have been very good on and off road. You are always going to get a bit of road noise. I am told they are made in the USA by Avon.

Yes, I am Cooper fan too. They (and every other manufacturer) just don't make 18" AT tyres and I was forced to change to 16" rims as I don't relish getting stuck!

masmiffy, I spoke with 4x4 and they were unable to supply that tyre. Cooper have discontinued this tyre and I'm not really sure why they have it on their site!

Honestly, I have literally chased all over Europe and they are not there!

Well your sorted with 16" wheels and tyres now so all good.

We went with Insa Turbo Rangers on our 2003 Vitara they seem ok, the truck is a second vehicle adapted for lamping.

As a matter of interest could you not have gone for 55 in place of 60?

Not sure masmiffy. I asked the Suzuki mechanic to recommend in writing what wheel/tyre spec I could use. I bought the car from them and to be fair they've been very helpful.

They recommended 16" rims with 235/70 R16 Tyres, I then opted for the Cooper Discoverer AT3s.

Having looked into the various mechanics and physics of changing wheels, it has made me realise how out of my depth I am!

I know changing rims can be an **** due to rim depths / diameters and possible interference but the tyre 'depth' change may have been possible.

All a bit hypothetical now I guess.
