leadbreakfast
That's why safety catches are made to be easily flicked off with the gun/ rifle mounted

billytheghillie
I read it properly, safety catch off then raised, mounted rifle if your over 60 probably being shooting longer than me, if not your just a amateur.
la bala
As i shoot on my own i have my own proceedure, I never use my safety, but i never close the bolt until i have the rabbit in the crosshairs. Works for me.

wraivi
glad I don't go shooting with you, safety and common sense are paramount!Hold on, the OP doesn't need a dressing down. He's merely sharing a lesson learnt, no doubt the shock of it has done the job. You yourself mention safety catch operation, when it's well known that mechanical safeties should not be relied on. Advice is free, experienced is paid for..... Not everyone reading the original post will have the OP's or your experience for that matter. Ultimately incident should serve as food for thought for all of us, not an opportunity to point fingers. Edited August 19, 2016 by wraivi
neutron619
Just take note what can happen amateur or not you digit Struggling to follow the point of this thread. Is the answer "gun fires when trigger pulled", or "unsafe handling leads to accidental discharge"? I don't understand. Surely both are true, and obvious? Cannon
Making this thread a sticky would bring embarrassment to the forum. It doesn't matter how long you've been shooting for. You openly admitted to having a totally avoidable accident with a rifle.

Ttfjlc
Just take note what can happen amateur or not you digit I appreciate you telling us that you had a near miss but hopefully you take note that your method was poor, was this a one off thing you did or do you usually remove the safety and then raise the gun? shoot and be safe
I would also thank the op for highlighting a situation that caused a negligent discharge. I am not a FAC holder so am not in a position to pass coments on the different shooting practices each shooter uses. Although I can see where the replying posters are coming from. I for one have learned from your "laps of concentration" Thanks for sharing
