I have a 4x4 that does 39mpg and has a low emmision count it has one of the best crash test scores of any vehicle and yes it can be seen on the school run aswell as in the middle of a field.Most of the poeple that slag them off just want one.On the other hand we could do wwhat some people would prefer and all drive a lada and dress the same as the local tramp in the park.

 

 

I know which i prefer.

I drive a Mercedes ML 270 4 x 4, when 4 of us go shooting we go in my car, with 4 lots of guns, boots, hold alls, waterproofs and cartridges we would not fit it all in a small hatchback or a Fiat Panda 4 x 4 like the do gooder anti 4 x 4 lobby want.

 

Nobody should have a problem with that! If they do then they are ******. You are utilising the vechile to its full potential.

The problem been when I use the car to go out in on say a Sunday afternoon, I always expect some anti to scratch or damage the car, I was thinking of having something on the number plates to the effect of "this 4 x 4 DOES go off road" or "Shooting Chariot" or I would rather be out shooting" but would the poorly informed anti brigade "get it".

It sounds like you use your 4x4 for what it was meant to be used for, off road, with the inevitable going on the black bits to get there!

There never has been a problem with that, not sure where you got the Lada driving tramp bit from though.

I own ( Wife Included) two four wheel drive's a Pajero LWB 2.5TD and a Defender 90 Diesel and for the weekend a 5litre Pontiac Trans Am so you can guess what I think of the green loby idiot's and what's even better because they are all older vehicles I wont be paying any extra TAX and I shouldn't have to either since last year I only done just over 400 miles in the Trany yet i pay as much tax as a rep doing 100,000 miles a year hows that fair

If Tax went on fuel the country would grind to a halt as all the hauliers would go out of business. Taxis, coach operators, transport operators, they would all suffer.

Really irritates me when the average 4x4 is no worse than a hot hatch, and definitely better than a high performance or luxury car. My fourtrack does about 29mpg is 12 years old never goes wrong over its lifetime I'm sure its probably greener than a lot of the alternatives yet gets slated as being a 4x4

I'm not sure how true this is and i havent looked into it so bare that in mind. However, I had conversation Tuesday and it was mentioned that hig powered vehicles will also be included with the 4x4's.

Snakebite, I dont think there will ever be a right way. Not until the governement stop trying to squeeze every last penny from the poor just so they (the rich) can drive around in big fat Jags.

 

Take the new conjestion charging in London for instance. They have now made the area bigger to incorporate Kinghtsbridge and Kennsington, where all the fat wallets live. This means now that they can jump in there Bentleys and drive 2 miles down the road to Liberties buy thier expensive wears and return, without paying the conjestion charge. That works eh?

i own a suzuki jimny, 1.3 litre, its a 4x4 but does 45mpg, just proves there are 4x4s out there with good MPG, but are still capable off road.

ps mine does go offroad if any of u wandered.

Well I actually get the option of a company car that I don't even take that, I take the allowance instead.

 

Given a thousands quid to spend a year, diesel and tax isn't very high on my list of things to spend it on

I am with you lot, make people who use 4x4's to do the school run pay through the nose, not people who are actually using them for the purpose designed! They were made to make driving on offroad possible so thats where they should be used! Its ridiculous, taxing farmer's and shooters who use 4x4's for NEEDING them would be like taxing carpenters for owning/using saws. I like snakebite's idea about having 2wd economical 4x4's type vehicles, that would make sense and cut immissions but would the fashionable people want them? Knowing they are not quite the full mccoy? Women by defualt should have to do an advanced driving test for them, the other day I had some women come tearing down a country lane at me in one doing at least 45mph, while I was in my pouncy KA all I did was pulled over pronto and prayed as she sailed past!

 

why cant every individual pick or choose which vehicle they prefer to drive ? if every one had the same oppinion or choice the world wouldnt be right would it ?

Well at some point people have to step in for the good of society, hilter felt it was fine to persicute Jews but should that have been allowed? At the end of the day global warming is going to happen, it may not effect US in OUR lifetimes but our childrens, childrens etc it will. So why should people use excessively polluting cars when a smaller run around would saffice? You have to balance societies rights with the individuals, as we are seeing with the public smoking ban.

I get the same MPG out of my fourtrack as I did from My Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI I have to say the big powered vehicles are included in the higher road tax bands but you never hear them being slated on the telly or getting stickers stuck on them or vandalised if you park in London. The whole eco crusade against 4x4's to me is flawed in that way. Still its an incentive to own an older more polluting vehicle as they are exempted from the top band
