HunterFarmer
So I was out walk Leo my lab x when I see a magpie in between 2 fences so I let Leo in to see what would happen and he pinned the magpie to the ground for a minute or so and then let it go? Is he a good gundog or not??

HunterFarmer
What do you think? Honestly? Not sure of him doing this that's why I'm asking!
Royboy
I was thinking you had a lab cross magpie !
bigbird
For one thing the magpie could have had your dog's eye out, for another... Why would you do that? Genuinely confused...
JDog
No opinion on the dog, only on the owner.
toontastic
Many years ago an old experienced shooter told me he'd never send his dog to pick up magpies or jays. The reason he gave was they always go for the eyes.
toontastic
Out of interest how old is the dog, I'm no expert but would doing this type of thing with a young dog discourage his retrieving instincts.
motty
Do you think that maybe the magpie was pecking the **** out of your dog, so he released it? My question is, why would this episode have any bearing on whether your dog is a good gundog?
deeksofdoom
To answer your question it would seem that your dog has good drive, however as the 'experts' have said probably not the best type of bird to start your dog off on.
