3 More Wabbits - And A Friendly Butcher

I took 3 more rabbits this evening. All free standing, although I must get a bipod cos my back hurts :good:

The smallest one was right through the eye from about 15 yards. Never seen a rabbit jump so high.

The second one (the biggest) was again right through the eye from 20 yards. This one went right down but it really bled out from the nose and mouth. Huge puddle on the ground.

The 3rd one I hit and it run. It then stopped and laid down, I put another round in it from about 30yards. Dead.

I then called my local butcher (great guy) who said i could take the rabbits up to him. He showed me how to gut them, how I should treat them, where to store them, how long to hang them up for etc etc, he was very very good.

He has asked me to come back tomorrow where he will teach me how to skin them. He even said I could bring a video camera along to film it for the site.

Cam phone again. I must get a little point and shoot for the feild.

He did indeed point out all the organs. He even told me how to tell a gutted and skined rabbit from a cat. Apprently there are a few who will try and pass cats off for rabbits.

If you look at the lungs on a rabbit one is higher than the other.

On a cat they are the same level

Could have been kidneys. Cant remember. I was trying to look brave as he gutted it :good:

Its the kidneys. one is higher on the back than the other on a cat. That statement has always intrigued me, why when rabbits are so easy to get would anyone want to pass a cat off as one?

cat was commonly known as "roof rabbit" as there indistinguishable when all the organs are removed and jointed. Back in the days of the world wars when rationing was in force, lots of cats went missing and were sold as rabbit, it got to a stage where few people would buy a black market rabbit unless it had its fluffy tail left on. With all the stray cats living off of vermin, plus the fact that the supply of wild rabbit from the countryside had been suspended its hardly surprising cats ended up in the pot. The following rhyme summed up the keeping of cats in peace-time and the eating of them in times of hardship.

Oh kittens, in our hours of ease

Uncertain toys and full of fleas,

When pain and anguish hang o’er men,

We turn you into sausage then.

Well done :good:

I'm interested to see how he goes about the butchering of bugsy.

My friendly butcher takes the rabbits off me for quid each  I'm building up quite a bunny fund at the moment.

Its funny though this time last year he didn't want any, due to him not having a summer market for them, this year he can't get enough of them. Seems like all the game to eat & high profile celeb chefs using rabbit & game in the menus are slowly bringing round the public to this delicious, wild, organic free range meat

Hopefully I can off load the abundance of squirrels I'm getting at the moment

Keep up the good work

I have said to the butcher I do not want payment. He can have them all for free. I hav just asked that he prepare the ones I want to keep for myself until I feel confident enough to do it.

Fair enough, I am considering whether the local butcher will after x amount of rabbits give the farmer a joint of meat or something. Will have to have a chat wiht him but will please the farmer.

And another 3 from this evening.

Good going

I was just about to post about the shear number of bunnies about at the moment, my dog has just had one on his walk - but to be fair there must have been 150+ that got away - it's unbelievable at the moment.

I wish I had a digital SLR so I could get some decent shots of the fields full of wabbits.

Here is the one that didn't get away, only a tiddler but I guess he was just a bit too cocky..

and a standoff, (not even sure if this will scale down clearly) this bunny just would not move so the mutt just stalked up him over a period of about 5 minutes, one step at a time - until the wabbit had had enough and just hopped off through the hedge to safety

I've not paunched/skinned rabbits yet but want to learn but without seeing it done I've not yet got the confidence. I'd like to see a pro do it so i can hopefully not make any school boy errors and unknowingly mess up/taint the meat.

Looking forward to the video.
