I'd love to have the ability to perform the £1200 Cambelt change myself.

You probably do, you just the b*lls to do it (and maybe a 'special' tool)

I helped my mate do the belt on his Ferrari 308GT4, we did it OK but it took us ages.

Even after we had checked the valve to piston clearance he still poohed himself when he finally tried to start it :/

I still remeber the bad back I had the next day after spending all that time reaching over to work on that engine :/

I wouldnt know where to start on my 53 plated Volvo and wouldnt even if I did. Too much bother with warranty etc. And i've had some issues too. The so called built for life Volvo has had a new steering pump, steering rack, steering wheel! I've had repeated problems with the nearside front suspension unit and now the rear suspension units have begun to knock. :good:

It's those heavy coffins that you put in the back when you moonlight as a hearse :good:

No - I sit and drink bad coffee while some bloke called Jose changes the oil, filter and air filter while two others valet the inside, clean the windows and check the tyre pressure. I could do this myself but they do it quicker and cheaper :good:

I do this every 5000 miles or whenever the smell of dog becomes overpowering.

Howw many of you service your own cars?

I try to do what I can to keep costs down, I usually spend a month doing a few things a week. It keeps my hand in and I do enjoy it.

Went to do the plugs and leads this week, no leads in stock (well not the ones I wanted, all they had were a set for £36 :P ) It was bad enough getting 4 plugs for £20!

When i first bought my 1996 N reg Astra in 1998 I took it to the garage as it was suffering from a misfire. I was told the Leads needed replaced. Due to the EcoTec engine being installed and still somewhat NEW and not much call for parts I was quoted £150 for 4 plug leads :good:

I told them to stuff off as it was under warranty and then the guy from the garage told me the warranty did NOT cover the leads. After telling him he could shove the car where the sun don't shine they eventually agreed to pick up the Tab on the leads!

That is beyond a doubt the most expensive set of plug leads i have EVER heard about :good:

I've paid more than that for Magnecor HP leads for a lancer Evo6 GSR I owned once, mind the leads had been identified as having too much impedance for the kind of spark I needed to get to where I wanted to be.

It was dyno'd at 451bhp at the wheels, which at the time was very close to what people thought possible.

Until Graham Goode ruined it all :good:
