matthewwhitbread333
Evening guys, I shot a squirrel earlier and decided to keep the tail. I have removed the tailbone and am left with just the outer tail. I need some advice on how to preserve this so it stays soft and fluffy but does not start to smell. Any help would be great Cheers Matt

Walker570
Usually just rub some salt in there right to the very tip and it will dry very quickly. The ones I have done for fly tying are still flexible and have no smell whatsoever.

steve_b_wales
Using the tanning solution available for Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies, tails can be tanned in as little as 24 hrs. The kit makes 2 gallons of liquid and tanning items is simple. I have done many fox/squirrel tails plus loads of rabbit skins.

Walker570
Ditch, I don't know if you can still buy formaldehyde at the chemist. The last time I went you could get a less volatile form, but it worked ok. With bird wings you just inject it into the soft tissue and pin to the shape you require. The muscle tissue will set hard and stay in that shape. Used to do full pigeon decoys the same but took the breast meats out and then injected everything else out, head neck, anything with meat/muscle. They made excellent decoys but a bit of trouble. Packed the breast area with toilet paper and sewed it up. They last a couple of seasons if you look after them. Careful with this stuff it is pretty lethal if you jab yourself ...you tend to go stiff ... hah!! we will not go into that

Walker570
Still advertised on google, so may still be available from your local chemist shop.
