pigeon controller
Post Doris I went out on friday thinking the birds would be all shook up and seperate. After five farms I'd not seen a bird. In my mind I wanted to shoot a field that I had left for four weeks since shooting in the hope that the birds would be confident. When I arrived it had approx fifty in the trees so I walked them off the find a position to shoot with a north western wind. This field ajoins a school and I wanted to shoot as it was half term also to use my hushpower to not anoy the locals. As I looked for a suitable hide position I noticed the brambles had been trodden down and found some twenty bore cartridges, very fresh!!!! I decided to go and look at another field and come back and see if the birds return. As I drove to the farm with the other field of rape the farmer caught me and told me that during the Doris wind the birds were all down in the valley so it could be a good area to shoot today. I agreed and had already seen fifty inthe trees with other birds joining. I returned to the previous rape and no birds had returned so I made my way back to the farm with the birds in the valley. I drove to the pitch and selected a position on the edge of a bomb crater with the wind off my back put out ten on cradles and two on the magnet. Moved the Disco and turned the magnet on, ten minutes nothing after half an hour the first bird returned and 32grams of No5 subsonic stoned it. I used the Hushpower because the wind direction was making me shoot at some very desirable properties. After the third bird the spring in the magazine tube stuck compressed so I unscrewed it , held my hand over the end Tapped it pushed a twig through it and it would not budge. In the end a bird came to the decoys and I threw it on the groud to pick up my other gun. YES you gessed it the spring and the follower both shot out down into the crater behind me with a splash for the follower hitting the water. I spent the next hour down the bank looking for the spring which I know did not hit the water but went down the bank. While I was down looking I could hear and see birds coming to the decoys. I held on for anther hour and then packed up to find a field I could shoot with my normal gun. I drove to a field I had looked at in the morning and with out spooking the birds feeding set up it was now 14.45 I put up a shot and two hundred birds just lifted off the field and went straight to the roost wood. I waited for another hour nothing returned or even flew across the field so I went home. Total for the day five birds. Picked up DB this morning at 08.00 and headed to pastures new as we believe that the flock in the area that we have been shooting in well spooked. After a half hour drive south west we started looking at the rape and straight away found birds feeding. We watched the two fields of rape for thirty minutes and birds were coming from all directions to it. Drove to the farm which we have not shot for some years to find a air rifle shooter in the barns. We asked it Jo Bloggs still was the Farmer and he confirmed it so a quick phone call and we had permission, the only problem was getting to the middle hedge that the birds wanted to be. It was heavy going in the soft clay like ground but we were all set up with ten on spikes and two on the magnet by 11.00. The first thirty minutes was manic with birds coming to us from all directions in tens and twenties, it then calmed down and we had some steady shooting. At approx14.00 the wind changed and became fresher which brought us plenty of birds. This was the payback for the day before. We shot until 16.00 and picked up one hundred and ten birds, as I sit writing this my FIT BIT tells me that I have completed 17,169 steps so far today and my back and legs confirm that. JDog
Well done. Apart from those lucky enough to have chopped up maize covers to shoot rape is still doing pretty well for most of us.
Cranfield
A great read as usual, but its a shame about the episode with the Hushpower, lucky you had a spare gun with you. I rather hoped your report this week would be saying that Doris had blown all your pigeons South, but there is no sign of them here. What birds we have seem to be favouring the clover more than the rape.

kippylawkid
Outstanding day once again following a nightmare day. I thought those kind of things only happened to me! Clover is the main pull on my patch too but no great numbers as yet.
