FAC - Open status

When this 'open ticket' thing came out, I had a letter from the Chief Constable saying that I now had an open FAC and could make my own decision if it was safe and proper to shoot on any land ... obviously where I had permission.

This situation still stands in Leicestershire(Top county when it comes to license issues). What really puzzles me is that the Home Office regulations still require one piece of land, police approved for all your calibres, even though you can produce paper records to prove you have numerous permissions to shoot. Crazy when they let you make the decision on the neighbouring farm. In my view, an open ticket should be that, period.

The final sentence on the Chiefs letter made it quite clear that any stupid use or lack of the trust given, would result in you having your FAC withdrawn.

With regard to the piece of land to cover all calibres, my piece of land is cleared for 22rf and I have 243 for stalking which was granted for paid stalks, so no specific land attached. I was granted open status a few weeks ago. Could I ask for a 17 centrefire for fox on my permission? The ground isn't cleared, but if licencing said no I could use my 243 (I have aolq).

Even with an open ticket, to demonstrate your "good reason", you must provide one piece of ground that is suitable (cleared) for the caliber. Unless, of course, your good reason does not require you to submit land on which you wish to shoot, ie. paid stalking.

labstaff ... as I see it you now have an open ticket and you can authorise yourself to shoot on your 22RF permission.

The whole situation is a dogs breakfast but the Home Office mandarins know best. Clever people. I had a discussion with one who was explaining to me that a 50 cal rifle was far too high muzzle energy to go deer stalking :lol: as if anyone would want to.

Yes, here lies the problem, my shooting buddy got x2 rimfires and a .270 on first application, his rimfires are used on my land, the .270 was granted by receipts of deer stalking using an estate rifle.

Now, my other shooting buddy applied for EXACTLY the same, my land for rimfires, same stalking ground, same receipts as they shot on the same day. At application they were direct next door neighbours, and he was refused the .270, no matter what, BASC involved they wouldn't budge, so I had my land cleared for .270 and they allowed it.

3 weeks between application, same FEO.

Thanks Walker, that is what I assumed. If they turned down a variation for 17 it would be ridiculous if I could go with a 243.

That's just bizarre, how can they justify That?

They should turn your variation down for a 17cf as you do not have a permission cleared for that calibre open fac or not makes no difference. Your 243 was granted for paid stalking period. Yes it's conditioned for alq so you could legally use it but that is not what the rifle was requested for.

Why is any land cleared for one calliber and not anouther you should have the same safety foe a GAT pistol as to a 50 call i had land cleared for 243 and turned down for 308 i had to get anouther pice of land cleared for the 308 i got an open ticket so i shoot the 308 on the land cleared for the 243 and turned down for the 308

I completely agree. I apply exactly the same rules to both my rimfire and 243. Make sure the bullet has a backstop I can see and is safe, make sure I identify my quarry and be aware of what is around me and my bullets flight path.

It's probably because that's what the shooter asked it to be cleared for.
